Can anyone recommend a sticky tire that would work better for cornering
than others? I suspect that the standard tires that came with my bike
are not the greatest. Here in East bay we have a lot of high-grade
hairpin turns. The speed is not that of an issue.

to see riders leaning no more than 30 degrees from the vertical, on
dry asphalt, crash off the road in the Giro d'Italia for fear that
their tires would wash out in a turn that was a bit tighter than

Super sticky in the turns, low rolling resistance, they work pretty good
when it is wet too.But like all racing tires, the sides can wear out faster if you are doing a
lot of high speed turns and stuff.
All of the super sticky in the turns racing types of tires don't get high
mileage because of the special rubber compunds they use.
it doesn't matter what brand either. But it does depend on how hard and how
many turns you do.
One guy I know of got about 500-600 miles off of a pair of these, before the
sides were worn down too much (not the top though), as he loved to take the
turns fast on the long downhill runs. Another guy has been using a pair in a
lot of triathlons a lot for the last year or so and his tires still look
real good.
I can't tell you much about my pair of Vredestiens yet, as they only have
about 400 miles on them so far.
Except that they sure do feel good under me, and they are noticably faster
than the old Maxxis I was using. -

carbon black tires solved many years ago. They were sent to the 7-11
racing team in Europe as the latest advance in tires and conspicuously

deisgning an instrument to measure the coefficient of friction and skid
angles, or the rate of detiroration of a tire rolling at different
angles on different surfaces is trivial. I would not do it in my
basement, but I imagine any serious tire manufacturer having such
instruments. Granted, they don't give us access to the numbers. Perhaps
Tire A has a skid angle only 2 degrees smaller than Tire B, and they
claim that Tire A is great for slippery surfaces. But I doubt the
difference between differnt tires is so small. Snow tires on my Miata
make a huge difference.same with "faster". Find a smooth straight hill and measure the time
it takes for the same rider on the same bike roll down it on differnet
tires. Do it indoors if you are concerned about the wind change.

from asking people.It might be just me but I have a hard time feeling any difference between
tires unless there is a huge design difference, like between slicks and
knobbies. Most road tires feel the same. I think that I have had better
luck with flats with different brands but haven't done a study to see if
there really is a statically advantage or not. -

Well you are probably right but they sure feel a lot better than my old
tires did.
The old tires were heavier, and would tend to slide out from under me
easily. Wet roads were almost dangerous.
The new tires do not seem to exhibit any of those squirrely problems I had.
As for being faster, I am sure that is subjective, but I have been keeping a
log of all of my rides.
After changing out the tires, my averages went up between 1-2mph.
The old tires sort of always felt like the brakes were dragging a little or
the rear tire was low in air pressure or something.
The new tires do not have that feeling like something is dragging on the
wheels.
Now one can argue that maybe I became more fit or something in the process
of which I cannot disagree, but it seems to be faster to me.
The one guy that did wear out a set of tires unusually fast, but he likes to
climb this steep mountain road in Arizona, and then descend at scary speeds.
He can outclimb everyone else in the process, so maybe his extra power
scrubbed the tires down faster than the rest of us can.
Of course maybe he had a lot more miles on them than he thought he did too. -
