I grew a stevia plant and used the leaves for sweetening. As a botanical
experiment, it was interesting enough, but the under-taste of pine in my
coffee....yech. It's VERY potent, tho--two tiny leaves are sweeter than
two tsp. of sugar, but with that piney taste.
The powdered stevia in the health food store is much more palatable,
thank god. Buy a small amount and give it a try---you may like it and at
least it's "natural", which goes very far in my book, over chemical
sweeterners. Damn stuff is pricey, tho.
All things considered, Im using daVinci's Praline SF syrup for
everything. I dont know if Pralines are made anywhere but the south, but
they're candies made of brown sugar. The Praline flavored syrup tastes
just like, well, brown sugar. I like it much better than stevia or plain
Splenda.
I dont know if you can cook with stevia or not.
