From The website - looks like a sub-3 given the 8:45 start time. Don't know
the overall chip time...
Great improvement in position indicates Steve was doing better than lots of
other runners....

Way to go, Steve! Looks like you finished before it got excessively hot
(based on weather underground). Congrats!

What's this - he's got a three hour music video in heavy rotation??
Sacrebleu! Sans-culottes! Croque monsieur! Cherchez la femme!
Lemme guess: the music is a remake of "Summer in the City"? An
extended (!) dance mix with a sort of Serge Gainsbourg circa 1984
feel, I'll bet.
Hey Steve, nice freakin' run! And using the sand marathon three years
ago as a training run - that's absolutely brilliant anticipation!!

Tough run, especially given the less-than-optimal training he's posted.
Given the time, I assume Steve violated his "don't hurt too much lest I
croak before the finish" rule...
Way to go, Steve!

"Before"? After? Where _is_ he? Is this to be rec.running's first
"assisted" suicide?
Note: Last year 1558 (4.2%) out of 36,680 registered finished with a gun
time of less than 3 hours. 30,772 (83.9%) finished in 2006.
This year only 754 (2.2%) out of 35,000 (registration limit) beat 3:00.
26,939 (77.0%) finished this year.
Let's see how 1617 (in the same classment as Steve) did:
Dist. Position Overall
05K 259 (fast start)
10K 250
15K 262
20K 261
25K 261 (Pretty consistent position to this point)
30K - (No recorded time at this distance)
35K 982 ( Dropped many positions here)
Finish 1690 (Where's my wheels??)
But wait, that's not Steve. He got:
05K 803
10K 860
15K 855
20K 839
25K 824 (Not as well positioned for the start as his counterpart, but
moving forward in the rankings)
30K - (No recorded time at this distance)
35K 839 (Sill holding position)
Finish 702 (Where'd everybody go? Steve improved 1 position overall
every 50 meters for the last 7.2 K)

Thanks for posting the updates Anthony, especially as the 5k splits page
has disappeared now :-)
Below is what my watch gives; you can see the funny wobbly,
cotton-wool-legs thing I had during 17th km, followed by a general
weakening after 21k and the massive bang when side stitch hit during the
28th km. Thus began the most wretched 10-12km racing of my entire career.
The stitch got better by about 32k only to be mixed up with some kind of
wall thing plus alternating waves of anger, annoyance, self-pity, misery
etc. as I became one of those "who-gets-passed-by-everyone".
When I hit 38k, and realised that I was maybe going to miss even a sub-3,
I finally managed to wake up, slowly at first then back up to the "right"
pace for the last 2.195km.

Thanks Dot. Excessively hot for me - at least when marathoning ;-) - is
anything over 10°C these days. But I can imagine that the poor beggars who
were out there til 2pm must have really had a tough time.

Thanks. I think I ran very stupidly in the first 10k, but it could've
ended even worse (I almost bailed when we passed the Bastille for the
second time - I was just 400yds from the hotel - glad I didn't).

Teehee :-) "VH1" is "Vétéran Hommes 1" ie 40-49yo fogies.

More like "Highway to Hell" but it did feel like Serge was doing his stuff
"entre mes reins" for a lot of the race - ouch!

Sand Marathon was a doddle compared to this one. I may post the finishing
line photo from Paris, if it's as painful as I think it will be ;-)

Thanks Dan, I did indeed violate it for nearly half the race. I hope to
have photographic evidence for you at some stage (as long as it won't
cause mass defection of my groupies ;-)

Congratulations Steve!
That is faster time than superhyped LA's with pacers and better conditions.

Oooooooo! I'll get you for that one, Mister Race! ;-)
Next time you step on a muddy rock and hurt your [censored]'six or tangle
yourself in a branch on a steep downhill and beat even "Downhill Doug&Dan"
to the bottom, just don't blame ill-luck or the Gods or anything - 'twas
me wreaking my omnipotent venegeance on thee ;-D
