Stem Raisers

  1. Hi

    I wondered if anyone has experience of using stem raisers? I've got a Trek
    4500 (2004) with Rock Shox Judys on the front and I've been given (foc) some
    four month old Duke XCs by a friend. I'm quite keen to install the Dukes but
    the steerer doesn't quite give me the handlebar height I want (in the region
    of 1 1/2 to 2 inches short). Two options spring to mind: one is to get a
    new stem with a different angle, in which case how do I work out the angle
    and will that also have the effect of moving the handlebars forward or
    backwards in relation to the saddle? The second option seems to be a stem
    raiser such as ( http://www.deltacycle.com/stems/raiser.php ) the Delta Stem
    Raiser which clamps onto the outside of the steerer and the existing stem in
    turn clamps onto that. It looks very simple in design, but the question is
    are there significant drawbacks to using such a device and what are the
    safety implications?

    Any thoughts, advice, wisdom greatfully received.

    How about 5" risers?

    You'll get the increase in height and be able to tune cockpit length by rotating
    them.

    One caution, the higher the rise on bars, the more likely they'll spontaneously
    rotate during hard braking or braking on a steep descent.

  3. I used a three inch stem riser on a previous bike I used to own. It
    raised the bars high enough for me. I had no problem turning or
    braking. The riser I used looked just like the one in the link you
    sent. Give it a try you will most probably be satisfied.

    He said he only needs an inch or two. No need for big risers, unless he
    has risers already. Risers do seem more stable than this stem raiser. As
    GT mentioned they look awfully flexy.

    The stem raiser would be nice if you want to be able to change heights
    from ride to ride - e.g. I'd like to have my handlebars higher for easier
    rides and lower on more techie rides. Changing bars from ride to ride
    isn't a very attractive option!

    Yep. I made my old MTB into a cruiser by putting on some 3.5" risers. It
    did just that, one time - that's when I realized I didn't have any tools
    on that bike (and I was just riding around town so I didn't have my 'bak
    with tools in it). I ended up riding a few miles with the bars horizontal!

    That'll help you understand the change in bar position (relative to
    the saddle or any other point on the bike that isn't capable of moving
    much...) when you change stem rise angle or extension.

  7. None at all. It was solid. When I broke my frame (which G. Fisher
    replaced) and bought a new fork, I no longer needed the riser since the
    new fork ( Mazz EXR Pro), compaired to the old fork (RS Quadra 21R),
    made up for the handle bar height difference.

    Dan - I use that very unit on my BASE bike, it's a solid piece of kit, and
    mine has taken many knocks, on 2 different bikes. Only thing, with mine I
    managed to strip the two bolt threads out (very heavy handed as I am, and
    I've had the part on and off heaps of times, too). I just drilled the
    threads out (counter bored), and sank 2 x steel nuts in there instead. Like
    I said though, that was no fault of the part itself, just my heavy
    handedness.

    Just as you say - solid as a rock. I haven't noticed any flex at all from
    mine, even under the heaviest of braking forces.

    That's an interesting suggestion and not something I had thought of. Could
    you recommend some 5" risers for XC riding (nothing too expensive - i.e. no
    carbon)?

    That's quite comforting. I couldn't *see* any reason why a raiser shouldn't
    work but its rather safety critical! I can't get this product via my LBS and
    I'm cautious about ordering unusual products off the 'net. Thanks for your
    opinion.

    I think we've all stripped a bolt at some point! However that sounds good in
    other respects. Stripped bolts don't worry me so much I just wanted it know
    that it was safe to use. Thanks for the advice.

    I've been using one for several months, it is rock solid, and really ugly.
    Be aware that there is a minimum rise, and it'is more than 1-2 inches if I
    remember correctly.
