  1. For those in Perth, you probably know Mount St. Went up there today with
a GPS and I measured the peak gradient as 15%. Short but sharp. Decided
to throw that climb in at the end of my commute to work each day, as a
    heart starter. 🙂

Anyway, was looking for a picture of Filbert St in San Francisco which
apparently hits 30%. Check this out.

Also found this article when looking for info on Filbert St. Old article
but might be enjoyed by the fixie/courier crew (Hippy!).

Had to use the knees as a guage (a very unreliable guide, unlike a gps) but
bits of Coachhouse Drive / Woodhill Rd in Adelaide might exceed that -
anywhere they have to groove the road to get the cars up is a bit steepish,
or so my legs were telling me.

Any riders in them fair hills got more scientific data?

    best, Andrew

There's also Fargo St, which is 33%. These people are crazy!

There are a few of them about, but for the most extreme steep climb you just
have to go to the land of sheep-fanciers.

It'd be fun going to court on this one:

Though there are no statistics on track bike injuries, San Francisco
officers ticket couriers for violating a state Vehicle Code section
requiring all bicycles to have brakes enough "to make one braked
wheel skid on dry level clean pavement."

What do you think the chain and pedals are? Brakes. What do you
think fixie riders love doing? Skids. Seems to satisfy the
requirements of the law to me.

P.S. This law exists in the Aus Road Rules too, and I'm pretty sure
my Tektro brakes on the roady don't satisfy the law.

    Ja.. cool site this.

I'm still looking for road frames to build up ss/fixed.
They're so bloody rare here! Serious!
Might have to cough up for a new one - Surly, Condor, etc.

  9. Here's a shot I took on the bikepath that runs along the shore of the
    Wallensee in central Switzerland:
    http://www.users.on.net/~njpayne/bikestuff/25percent.jpg. The text under the
    25% sign says "cyclists dismount".

A couple of plots off my altimeter speedo of some other Swiss mountain
passes. My speedo recorded the max gradient on Rigi Kulm as 28% - I was
having problems keeping the front wheel on the ground on the steepest
    sections:

There's a wonderful wee road on the shores of Loch Ness that is
hellishly steep, even though it winds up through multiple hairpins. The
bends are so tight and steep that when I went down it in my clapped out
old Escort (it probably couldn't make it in the other direction) that
at times only three wheels were on the ground. 🙂

Thanks for that bit of on-the-job research dtmeister. I go up Mt St only
about once per week and have wondered about its gradient. Although,
compared to some of those streets in NZ, SF, UK etc., Mt St is but a pimple
on the bum of an elephant!

Rode into the hills via Welshpool Rd on Monday and realised my hill fitness
was sorely (being the operative word) lacking!!! It's all relative eh?

To put it bluntly, I suck at climbing. Here's the data from the GPS,
it's the last peak with the cursor on it. Yeah, it's a pimple, but a
steep one. I'll be happy when I can climb it without the black mist
descending as I near the top. 🙂

Thanks for that .dt. Makes it look quite impressive!! What's that 10% blip
about 1.5km before it...the Narrows Bridge? Didn't realise it was that
steep. I haven't notice the 'black mist' at the top of Mt St...sounds a bit
    ominous...hmmm. ;o)

Re sucking at climbing, join the club! But I'm determined to improve and
not have legs that start to feel like lead pipes half way up a prolonged
climb. Taking part in the winter calender of Cyclo Sportif events and
King's Park TTs should help too.

Might see you on way in to CBD next Wed morning, accompanied by one
overweight 30-something male friend and two young blonde female riders.

  15. The companies wont cover us or let us work for the most part now if we use
track bikes. There are some exceptions made to the better riders. The
problem was the guys without the skills were taking it up. I don't ride on
myself based on the knees alone.

I've seen a few try and go back to freewheel with one front brake.

I think that's George St, coming up from near where the new RAC building
is to the lights where the Mitchell freeway north offramp filters into Hay St.
It's quite steep, but it's no Mount St.

Yeah, did it again today and it was better. I think I've got the pacing
sorted better, heart rate was sub 165 at the top instead of 180+

I was on the motorbike on Monday, with organic speed limiter (OSL) on
the back, saw you stonking up the hills. We cruised past doing 90.
Was thinking of doing a hills ride this weekend, alas my head cold has
not shifted after a week of taking it easy.
I have been warned off doing the masters race at Pickering Brook by the
    same OSL.
Do Welshpool Rd again, you'll be gliding up the hill in no time.
