According to the Sears web site it's 240 deg F (not 140).
Also, several folks have warned about the dangers of high pressure, but my understanding is that this unit shoots out a more gentle steam mist, rather than a high pressure blast.

240 degrees and "gentle steam mist" are mutually exclusive. Water boils at 212. In order to get hotter than that, it MUST be under more pressre than would be implied by a gentle steam mist. Ya can't have it both ways.

That's the most relevant info yet -- that it actually doesn't do a good job on bike chains.

Back on the original topic, I used ours on my relatively clean chan on my race bike (road) and found it to have very little effect. I didn't soak the chain in degreaser first though. Better to use a power link and solvent wash.

Pass the 212-degree steam over an appropriate heating element, and you've got 240-degree superheated steam. The temperature of 212 deg F at 1 atmosphere only applies to vapor and liquid in equilibrium; once the two are separated, you can heat the vapor as much as you want.
