Statins - Can I refuse ?

You can refuse to breathe or to eat, if you really want to.

Statins are of course purely optional. For a lot of T2 diabetics
they're useful preventives.

You can always refuse any medication, even in the hospital. You run
the risk of being dropped from your doctor's patient list, but you still
have that right.

Diabetics have a great risk of premature heart attack and thus must manage
their cholesterol more aggressively than non-diabetics. Some signs that
you need some sort of anti-cholesterol therapy are:

Triglycerides/HDL ratio greater than 3.0 (in mg/dL. 1.3 in mmol/L)
(lower is better)

Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio greater than 4.0 though less than 3 is better
(lower is better)

LDL greater than 130 mg/dL though less than 100 is best.

Total Cholesterol greater than 200 mg/dL though less than 170 is better

HDL less than 40 mg/dL if male. Above 50 is best.

Note that there are respected doctors arguing that standard targets are too
lenient.

(To change mg/dL cholesterol to mmol/L, multiply by 0.0259 )

Sure. Just don't get them (expensive aren't they) or take them.

Drugs do have a history of prolonging life tho. Myself I don't have a
problem with that. You do?

No, this information is monitored and recorded by your local
International Statin Police (ISP) who will come and force you
to take the missed doses!

There's no reason to be paranoid about this though, they track
this info through the internet and, in most countries, your
service company has to tell you about your ISP. Just call
them up and be persistent until they tell you about your ISP.

I am not a doctor. The ISP have them just where they want them.

The first time one confronts a scenario where one decides to reject a
*doctors* suggestion may be a traumatic transition. Life becomes less
simple. I'm guessing this why you ask if you "can" refuse.

You can refuse. However, doing so can lead to some bizarre behavior on
the part of doctors.

I had one years ago tell me I couldn't be his patient unless I took a
statin, even after I explained that my family members had a history of
bad reactions to statins.

I had a cardiologist scream at me "you're committing suicide!" when I
told him I would not take a statin because of the potential for
irreversible cognitive effects. And he quite literally screamed, in a
way that made you wonder about his mental health.

Fortunately, in the past two years I've run into doctors whose responses
have been much more supportive.

One endo told me that many of her patients had experienced terrible
cognitive side effects from statins and that after she took one woman
off one the woman said, "You've given me my life back."

Plus, I ended up in a study that found that my very high cholesterol was
made of of huge "fluffy" LDL of a type that correlated to longevity.

Finally, when my dad died a couple months after his 100th birthday, we
found his 35 year old medical records showing his cholesterol to be 340.
He did not die of a heart attack.

And, to top it off, when I used Zetia, a non-statin to lower my
cholesterol, it worked very well--except that I developed symptoms of
severe cholesterol deficiency at a supposedly "normal" cholesterol
level, including bizarre visual problems (which went away when I stopped
the drug.)

Proabably. Americans are pretty compulsive about drugs and pretty much
everything else, like, spending money on [censored] and war and threatening
allies with silly [censored] like "Eider yor wit us or yor agin us.".

But I don't think it is compulsory that you be compulsive like the rest
of the US.

What drugs you take, and what advice you take from doctors is your
business, and none is compulsory. No one can make you do anything you
don't want to do. The land o' the free may not be as free as it was
pre-9/11 but you still have some personal rights.

Doctor and doctoring seems to have lots of meanings hence a wide option
of actions. Obeying your Doctors Orders versus noncompliance with your
friend and helper as an example. (Notice case 😉)) ).
