Start at the valve?

  1. I grabbed a couple of new tubes Friday night, since I had had 2 flats (a
    flat and a failed spare) the last time I rode.

    Idly looked at the box the tubes (Michelin Aircomp) came in. It says, in
    several languages, "To remove your tyre, always start at the valve. ...
    Always finish fitting the tyre at the valve."

    I find this to be odd. I always start removing the tire, and putting it
    back, as far from the valve as possible. I've always thought that this
    would lessen the chance of damaging the tube around the valve.

    Am I doing it wrong, or are they making suggestions that will tend to
    create a market for more new tubes?

    That's what I always do. Taking off the tire, it probably doesn't matter too
    mcuh. Putting the tire back on, the part of the bead most likely to pinch
    the tube is the last part you push on. If the last part is at the valve
    stem, you can push the valve stem in and out a couple of times to unpinch
    before you inflate.

    that he was on his way fom the printer to the test track when gunned
    down.

    up tilted and risking tearing it apart when pumping the tube on the
    road? If you fit the tube inside the tyre ending at the fixed point it's
    a lot trickier to get the tube evenly laid out.

    Pump up the tube a little before mounting the tire bead. That should give the
    tube some shape and keep the valve stem straight. If you really want to, you
    can use the valve nut, too, though I usually toss those out.

    I have always done the opposite and it has always worked for me. A
    grouchy old mechanic once told me that it's harder to get a tight tire
    on if you end at the valve.

    nipple?
    tube nipples are placed into the hole.
    then one dances three times in a circle and tosses ground newt to the
    west
    then using both hands-one on eoither side of the tube's nipple
    you implore the gods to get this together
    and proceed to equally thumb the tube into the crevasse between tire
    and rim
    soas the nipple stays balanced by the equal thumb pull and centered in
    the hole.

    Starting at the valve when removing may or may not be a good idea; I
    don't, but I can't say that it makes a difference. Finishing the
    installation at the valve strikes me as questionable; I've had more
    problems with pinch when I've tried that.

    I think it's probably a matter of taste, preference and experience,
    and the person who wrote the procedure was applying their own. If I'm
    completely wrong, someone will doubtless say so.

    and the person who wrote the procedure was applying their own. If I'm
    completely wrong, someone will doubtless say so.

    Nope, I agree with you (which doubtless means you ARE totally wrong!). I
    /start/ installing a tire at the valve so I can get the beads "into" the rim
    easier there; I /remove/ a tire starting AWAY from the valve, so there's no
    thick rubber to deal with there.

    Seems to work...

    In his books Leonard Zinn also advocates ending at the value. It makes it
    easier to push the bead over the rim because the bead on the opposite side
    can ride in the "valley" of the rim... that's makes the rim "smaller" in
    diameter so it's easier to push the bead on. You can't do this if you end
    away from the value because the valve prevents the bead from dropping into
    the "valley". See page 158 in his Cycling Primer.

    If you finish with the valve at 3 or 9 o'clock, you avoid both that

    doan make no sense.
    darkens the meanings
    the nipple is the first resort not the last
    with a 27x1-1/4

  18. as far as i can tell-
    one holds the lightly inflated tube with fingers top thumb
    bottom-unless of course-one hand either side of a ceneterd nipple
    and rolls the tube into the tire and under the slime liner with the
    fingers as thumb pushes the bottom tube up and in.
    then the tire gets rolled into the rim.
    then pinch the tire's bottom edges inward extensively.
    inflate- hoping the nipple stays cenetred
