Doesn't surprise me one bit. LC has been the 'It' diet of the past
year or so. Many New Years Resolutions include 'weight loss', and a
lot of those look at the latest Trend, which this year would have been
LC.
Given how many people have dumped their Resolution diet by the middle
of the year, the figure seems quite reasonable.

It will be interesting to see what happens this January.

It's not rocket science. Low carbers lose weight and learn how to control
weight. The rest just find excuses for not losing weight.

I was just thinking the same thing. I've only been around the NG for the
last six months - does it get swarmed with questions like "how do I do
Atkins" starting January 1?
(I never asked this question...I read the book first.)

Yes.
And even more of "My time is valuable and I can't waste it reading the
book or checking the newsgroup for replies so email me direct with all
the details of the diet and a never-fail diet sheet including all
meals, snacks and recipes. Oh, and I don't eat any red meat, soy
products or nuts and I want it low fat, because we all know that's
healthier. By tomorrow."
Well, ok, that last is an exaggeration, but I've seen it happen a lot
over the past 6+ years.

Every year this newsgroup has gotten very heavy traffic in January which
drops off by March.
However, what was different this past year is that the traffic not only
dropped off, it dropped off catastrophically. Our traffic here now is a tiny
fraction of what it was three years ago.
I attribute this to the influx of crapola "low carb" products on the
marketplace in combination with low carbing going mainstream. I suspect
that the widespread availability of [censored]-filled "low carb" foods meant that
a much larger percentage of people who started out low carbing for the first
time did not lose any weight and hence abandoned the diet early.
In the past, the typical January posting was someone who had started out low
carbing, lost a bunch of weight during induction, and then "stalled" after a
couple weeks. The initial weight loss encouraged them to look for help here.
However, if a dieter loses no weight at all on a new diet, they are more
likely to move to something else and not look for online help.
BTW, the explanation for the drop off in traffic can not be blamed on the
recent heavy troll traffic, either, as there have been many previous troll
invasions but in the past they did not permanently damage our traffic here.

What about all of the new places one can go for LC help online?
Despite what Atkins or anyone else says, I think people know instinctively
that to lose weight they must eat less. Also, I don't think people believe
that they can load up on LC candy and lose weight. Those who eat [censored] foods
probably just aren't ready to lose weight and likely would not have lost
weight on any plan.

I read this ng but don't post as:
1) I can read the book(s)
2) I know how to google
3) I didn't need to be told that I am too slim to try to lose any weight
There are friendlier LC boards out there.

I wasn't here then, but since I've been reading posts in this group,
the traffic has slowed down alot. You mentioned this in August and I thought
it was just because it was summer taking up everyone's time. I guess it
isn't.

That's possible. Some people at work have asked me about which lo-carb
products I would suggest. When I reply that I haven't eaten any, they think
it is strange, and then ask me what it is that I do eat. They seem to think
that all those products are what lo-carbers eat all the time. Perhaps they
assume that is all there is to it.

Some people I have talked to about the diet have not lost any weight.
You may be right that if they don't see any results by switching to lo-carb
products that the diet is just another fad. And lately it does seem like a
fad to me. The diet doesn't appear to be about eating naturally anymore,
just about buying the lo-carb products.

Roger,
The first time I low carbed, I most definitely did NOT "eat less." I ate a
lot more and I dropped 20 lbs so fast it was spooky. A few months before
that I'd tried eating 1200 calories a day of health carby food and had lost
only one (1) lb. I ate cheese and burgers (without the bun), steak, cream,
spinach, salad, broccoli the whole wonderful traditional low carb menu, and
quite literally "watched the fat melt away" without ever being hungry.
But in those days there were no low carb tortillas, cereals, cookies, and
other stuff full of high glycemic carbs. The only "low carb" food was the
Atkins bar which was very expensive and only available in specialty stores.
The first two things I learned when I checked in here was 1) Atkins bars
stalls a lot of people and 2) calories still count. I also learned a zillion
cooking tricks that made it possible to keep low carbing, like, for example,
how to bake with whey protein powder and how to make low carb chocolates
that were truly low carb.
I don't pull it out of my head that since the explosion of low carb
products, people are trying what they think is a low carb diet, don't lose
any weight and quit because they think a "low carb" diet is a diet full of
bogus low carb products. I meet those people all the time. All of them
have bought into the "low glycemic" thing, which means they eat enough carbs
to prevent ever getting into that wonderful fast fat burning beginners'
state. And quite a few think a low carb diet means low carb cereal for
breakfast, low carb candy bars, low carb chips, low carb frozen dinners and
low carb beer. Since the Atkins Nutritional people have spent a fortune in
advertising to get that message across, that isn't surprising.

What???? Where have you been living Roger? Fantasy Island? People who
are desperate to lose will grasp at anything that sounds too good to
be true. If they didn't - non of the low-carb [censored] manufacturers would
stay in business more than a month. When I first heard of low-carb
years ago I thought it was just fine to stuff myself with butter and
cream and steak with no thought to calories or portion control. It
worked too - in the beginning. Once the water weight was all gone I
went into a permanent stall. I was in ketosis (burning all that
dietary fat) but didn't drop an ounce. I went back to my old lifestyle
and stayed there until I got desperate enough to actually read a book
and follow instructions. Instinct? Phooey. This fat woman's instinct
is to look for the easy way out.
