I had the Ultimate BRS-70B for a couple of years until my wife misjudged the
length of the tripod legs while pulling her car into the gargage... I have
since bought the Ultimate Pro (one step up from the Ultimate BRS-70B). When
shopping for a new stand I looked at both the Park that you are looking at
above and the Ultimate. In my opinion either of the Ultimate's will be
better than the Park. Yes, I was in the store mounting bikes onto both of
the stands looking at stability. In my opinion the Ultimates are better
stands.

The Ultimates also fold up for better transportation... (great for 24 Hours
of Moab ect...). I bought my Ultimate Pro from Performance for $160.00 US on
sale. The Pro is natually a little nicer than the Consumer, both will do the
job.

You may want to check out www.mtbr.com for a review. No matter what bike
stand you buy none of them hold up well to a wife with a car...

I've got a similar - but not identical one.

Two things I like:

- It collapses/folds conveniently - no L-shaped legs hanging out
- It's *really* stable - in all directions.

The clamp on mine, however, is different from the one in the pic. Mine has no
lever, just a knob and on a PITA scale of 1-10, it's definately a 9.7. You're
standing there with 32 lbs of bike in one hand, trying to push the jaws closed
with the other hand, and the fushluggener thing jams about 70% of the time.

the legs would like mud from washing bikes on it. For the park I
know the head and sliding support post slide out of the base, so i'm
tempted to hammer a post in the back yard and slide the unit over it
when I want to wash the bike or work outside.

I bought the BRS-70B in favor of the Park stands
for stability, foldability (is that a word?) and price.
I tried both of them and the store and the Park
tended to fall over backwards with a bike mounted.

Looking at using them mostly with traditional round tube frames, and one
Garry FisherY frame. While I know they should be used on the seat post,
there are the odd times you want to hold the frame. Any chance of either of
them working on the Y frame?

Also I intend to use it pretty much at home- basement or outdoors. Thinking
that the ultimate tripod would be nice for outdoor uneven surfaces, but you
may be tripping over the legs, and I'm not sure how the legs would like mud

I have the Park PRS-5, which is a pretty good stand, is portable, you
can take it to races, whatever. But I love the Ultimates, which
happen to load so much easier than any of the Park models. My mobile
bike shop buddy uses the Ultimate Pro, and it's really slick and easy,
stable, and just better, imo, than the Parks, even though I have one
and use it a lot.

After all the Park negativity, I should mention my cheap-ass PCS-1 grips
everything I've ever put near it. It grips it easily and it grips it well.
Also, I don't know how you guys work on bikes, but I've never had the
feeling it was going to tip over. So for whatever that's worth, there you
go.

I've never used anything but the PCS-1, but I can say that it has it's
limits when doing certain maintenance chores. Stubborn crank bolts or
bottom brackets that need a little extra emphasis to loosen up can sometimes
overcome the stability limits on the PCS-1. For anything else, and just
plain storage, it's a fine piece of gear.

I like my PRS-5, but like others have mentioned before, because of the
plastic pieces, it can be a little unstable. I got it with the idea of
bringing it with me on road trips.

I had a Park PCS-1 and it suited my home needs. It held the bike well and
felt stable. I was lucky enough to get a good deal on EBAY a few years ago
and picked up a PRS-02. Either way you go, some good deals can be found on
EBAY.

Lots of feedback, thanks! Actually suprized to see such good opinion of
ultimate vs park (which I had been leaning towards). My initial thoughts
were that the ultimate had more fiddlly parts which could wear, fail etc,
but given the feedback I guess that is not really an issue. Think that with
the ultimate it wins hands down in the pack it to the trailhead competition.
Just not sure how often I'd do that. For around home use I'm still a bit
leary of tripping over the tripod legs though. Stability wise for the park
I've been told that for crank arms etc its easy enough to stand on one of
the legs while you are torquing on things.

It sounds like I should be giving the ultimate a second look, so I'll have
to get by a store and have a look at these 2 side by side.

It's simple to fold down when transporting... Loosen the knob on the back,
fold it down and tighten the knob... Much simpler that it may look.

I might add, the only thing I don't like about my Ultimate is the
clamp for the telescoping vertical bar is hard as hell to tighten,
it's a thumb buster. The Ultimate folks said a Salsa quick-release
will work in place of, but I've yet to do that. Also I wish it had a
clamp instead of a twist mechanism to hold the bike, but I can
deal with that. Clamp mechanisms have their own issues is guess,
but since I've never owned one, I can't say for sure.

Went and looked at both. Store recommended the ultimate due to higher
clamping preasure. Ended up going with the ultimate due to compact nature
and large # of recommendations.
