  1. Hi, I have a question about low-carb bars. I have periodically eaten the
Atkins Advantage bars as a meal replacement whilst on induction and kept
losing weight. I have recently tried a cheaper (in this country at
least) Think Thin bar and I am having problems. The net carb value is 2
per bar but the total count is 25 comprised of glycerine (13) and
Maltitol and fibre (10). I have stalled and perhaps even have gained
weight. Moreover, they don't taste too good. Now I should probably give
away the bars altogether, but I'm curious about the sweeteners in this
bar and the effect they may have on blood sugar. Has anyone else had
    similar problems with these?

Yes, some people absorb much more of the carbs in maltitol than they
THINK. Sugar alcohols are tricky that way. IMO, based on what I've
read, I strongly suspect that if you get terrible digestive upset
(anything from hellacious gas to explosive diarrhea) after eating some
of them, then GOOD NEWS -- you probably didn't absorb much of it (having
forcibly and downright violently tried to expel it from the body). If,
OTOH, there is little to no digestive upset, your body probably DID
absorb some of it and you are taking in far more carbs than you THINK
you are. Pick you poison. Personally, the only thing I subtract from
    carb counts is fiber.

NOTE, that some people can tolerate one kind, such as lactitol, but not
another, such as maltitol or sorbitol. One general exception is
erythritol, which seems to be well-tolerated by most people AND does not
seem to have much effect on blood sugar/absorption. I use it (from
Netrition.com) to make my own chocolate candy bars.

My experience has been that when I expect my nutrition to come out of a
box which contains ingredients that really are not food, I usually am very
disappointed. If they do not even taste good to me, going back for more
is basically punishing myself anew. On the other hand, bits of fresh,
cut-up cucumber, bell peppers, or avocado, and leafy greens (preferably
organically grown), have never let me down. I don't have to ask "what is
THAT ingredient?" and my body thanks me for it.

Just my personal experience (and I used to eat a LOT of packaged foods in
my day - they've been bland, lifeless and tasteless for the most part, or
even worse have TOO much taste of chemical residue and additives). YMMV,
    of course.

  5. I eat perhaps one or two of the Atkins bars every other day when I've
got back-to-back clients and very little time to spend on lunch. I
haven't stalled on them a bit, but I knew that if I did, these very
likely would be the culprit. Drop 'em and see what happens. Simple
    solution.

NOTE: The Sweetzfree is getting harder and harder to obtain

    Saffire's Low-Carb Chocoate Bars

    Chocolate, baking, Hershey's - 1 1oz bar
    Chocolate, baking, Scharffen-Berger 99% cocoa - 1 scored bar
    Butter, 4.5 tbl
Whole Foods milk & egg protein powder, 2 tbl
Pure Stevia, Trader Joe's 3-4 scoops
    Erythritol (netrition.com), 2 tbl
SweetzFree (liquid Splenda from Sweetzfree.com), 30 drops
    Raisins - 1/2 oz (14 grams)

Break chocolate into smaller pieces. Put the 2 chocolate bars in an
uncovered glass dish and heat in the microwave at 30% power for 5
minutes. Add 4 tbl butter (set aside 1/2 tbl) and heat for another 90
seconds at 30% power. Stir well with small wire whisk. Add SweetzFree,
erythritol, stevia and protein powder. Whisk well. Let cool to room
temperature. In the meantime, soak raisins in a small amount of water
to plump them up. Butter the bottom and part of the sides of a 9x13
cakepan with the remaining butter. Pour mixture into pan, making sure
it covers the bottom of the pan. Selectively place raisins evenly
throughout the mixture. Dab top of the raisins with chocolate if you
would like them covered. Place in freezer until hard.

Take out of freezer when hard, let thaw slightly, then slice into 16
pieces. If they have softened enough to make it hard to get them out of
the pan, place back into the freezer until hard again. Take them out
and individually wrap the 16 pieces in plastic wrap. Keep in freezer to
keep them hard or in fridge if you like them softer (they'll still be
firm, but they get pretty soft at room temperature.

Using the above ingredients, 1 of 16 servings is 2 carbs and 62
    calories.

NOTE: By letting the mixture cool to room temp, buttering the pan, and
then freezing it, it makes the individual bars much easier to remove
    from the pan relatively intact.

If you continue to eat them, you will continue to gain weight. Do the diet
right or don't do it at all.

LC succesfully and never have an Atkins bar, shake, ice cream or even read

I beg to differ. While some of the bars are not so good (chocolate
peanut butter sucks), I have developed a probably-unhealthy affection
for the S'Mores flavored Advantage bars.

Also, I've found the vanilla shakes make a good topping for a bowl of
berries (although cream works nicely too).

My take is that Atkins Nutritionals simply expanded too quickly. I
don't think there was anything wrong with their product line from a
business perspective (purist LC diet perspective aside), they just
overestimated demand for their products. First, not enough people want
to low-carb, so the market for their products are too small. Second,
their products are uneccessary for low-carbing (while if you want to do
Weight Watchers, you have to buy their [censored]).

  15. I like their chocolate peanut butter bars. They're the only ones I can eat
that don't give me terrible gas (no SA's). I haven't tried the S'Mores
flavoured ones, but the cookies 'n cream made me seriously consider a trip
    to the emergency room. :-)

  16. I haven't tried a lot of their products but the peach iced tea is very good
and I like their chocolate peanut butter bars.
OTOH, their pastas are more than vile, they're inedible. I made the
mistake of buying 10 boxes online before trying them (they weren't
available in my local stores at that time). That was at the beginning of
my LC life a year and a half ago. I still have 9 boxes gathering dust in
my basement. I keep thinking I should try to sell them to some company
    that makes bungie cords. :-)

    Hollywood, the resident MBA, writes:

I haven't actually read a story, but if it is as you describe, then
they are in for long range trouble. If you don't need the company (or
more specifically, to pay the company) to lose the weight, then I don't
see where the revenue is going to come from. Especially, if as many
here believe, using the products of the company are counter productive.

Personally, I think Dr. Atkins, warts and all, was a very good person
who wanted to help people. I think Atkins Nutritionals was probably set
up to help people do the program, lose the weight, and feel better, in
a time when there were few others trying to do that. The subsequent
explosion of products and licensing that seemed immediately to follow
his death is, imho, what got the company in trouble, and what has led
to the general ill will towards AN that I note in the group (ie "money
grubbing, profit mongers with no regard for people"😉.

I like that there are Atkins products. I love (and control very
tightly) the Endulge wafer cookies (I mean very tightly, like one a
week, maybe). That said, if the Dr.'s Eades came out with products
tomorrow, I'd book it on Atkins because I like the Eades better. That
said, the draconian new bankruptcy laws haven't gone into effect yet,
so they should emerge, and with proper strategy and execution, should
return to profitability. (I don't think AN will ever be as big as WW,
due to the "Don't need it to do it" factor).

I just personally found them to be vile then...
And yes, I tried the s'mores, as well as one each of the others.

I've only recently found a good protien bar I can stomach, made by EAS
and is being carried by Wal-mart. 1 to 3 grams of net carbs each and the
price is under $2.00 per bar.
