Petacchi is obviously an excellent sprinter. It would have been even better to see Cipo doing battle with him. Other than the TT stages, so far Mario would have affected the outcome on each stage. He is sorely missed. He would either win or Petacchi's wins. This course looks like Mario would have had a shot at finishing and contesting the sprint on the Champs Elysees for the first time in his life and would have been a great way to put the cherry on top of one of the best pure sprinters of all time.
Back to reality...can Petacchi compete for the MV points jersey? His climbing is sufficient to make it worthwhile to pursue the points jersey, is it not so? He has won half of all the stages, he should be in green already. I am trying to find his tally but the olntv.com site only shows leaders for categories.

He's just 1 point behind RmE right now. But Ale already stated that he won't be sprinting for intermediate sprints. If he manages to win the MV just with the final sprints, OK, otherwise he won't care. He's there for the stages, not for the jersey. That's what he said.

That is really odd. I wonder if Feretti is behind this...after all, they have other concerns and since a jersey is compelling to defend but stage wins have no such baggage. Still, Ivan Basso is @ 2:18 and Aitor Gonzales @ 2:11. I guess the team still plans to be fresh to defend any GC hopes from those two. If they stumble while Al stays high in the points rankings maybe they will change the team's focus.

Hey Kraut, Cipollini finished the Giro plenty of times.
So he has. However he has never finshed the Tour De France.
Most Italians don't care as much about the Tour as they do the Giro.

Exactly !!! So do you think- like me- that Cipo wouldn't be bothered/arsed about fiinishing the Tour? Do you think that he would have gone for the first flat stages then climbed off his bike and gone home before the big mountain stages?
The OP, to which my first reply was to, stated
