The Giro visits the Passo di San Pellegrino:
The Giro has never used this as a stage finish.
May 26th in the Giro:
We've talked a lot about Binda. Yet there is more. He
took the first of his 41 stage wins 81 years ago today,
in 1925 in Bari, ahead of Girardengo. Girardengo had
been winning since before the war. He had taken his
first stage at the tender age of 20 in 1913. But twelve
years later it was time for him to move aside.
The youngest Giro stage winner was Olimpio Bizzi, who
came in first on this date in 1936. Bizzi stayed with
the sport for a while, and won his last stage also on
this date, in 1950.
The only Brit to ever take a stage was Vic Denson on
this date in 1966. Riding for Anquetil's Ford team,
he saw his chance on the way to Campobasso and he
took it.
If you are going to win more times than Binda then
there will be a lot of anniversaries of stage wins.
But true to form, Cipo goes overboard today:
