  1. i seem to be missing something. i understand the riders in the breakaway playing cat and mouse with
one another in the final kms but why keep doing it when Piil, then Sacchi squirted out front? why
didn't they pool their efforts to reel them in?

    115 miles= tired legs

you can only do so much, esp after 3 days in the mountains.

C'mon Jason What the hell would you know? Imagine one of our top flight experts providing good
analysis. What are all the "Fat Master" posters gonna say? Bill C

There were at least two good sprinters still in the group. If somebody dragged the group back to the
two riders the sprinters would likely win anyway. A rider had to get away solo but the sprinters can
jump hard enough to get on their wheel and the rider won't tow a sprinter to the line. And like
    Jason said, they were tired.

Nobody mentioned that Piils also won in Lancaster, PA a month ago.

This is all I can recall about Jason

Seems like a nice enough guy, but you're right the Fattie Master's should weigh in on this.

  6. i am not sure, how about you start chasing and i'll sit on and think about it for a minute.

It is much more difficult to win a stage in the TdF than win Lancaster. They are not remotely
    comparable.

I wasn't comparing the effort-just that the guy should be known here and it is interesting that a
Tour stage winner won a race here so recently. How many other Tour stage winners have even raced
    in the USA?

Plenty. Greg Lemond, Bernard Hinault, Davis Phinney, Andy Hampsten, Jeff Pierce, Lance Armstrong,
Andrea Tafi, Stefano Zanini, Phil Anderson, Jan Svoroda, Erik Vanderaerden, Steven Rooks the list
goes on. That's just off the top of my head - there are more.

There are 20+ stages to the Tour every year (therefore a fair number of stage winners) and some Div
1 teams come here for the West Coast spring races, then again for the Pennsylvania week - back in
the day they had Red Zinger and Tour du Pont/Trump.

You missed a few big ones. Laurent Fignon, Erik Decker and Michel Polentier have all raced
    in Colorado.

Since 1998, of all the riders who have won Tour stages, only Armstrong, Oscar Freire, Leon Van Bon,
Salvatore Commesso, Stefano Zanini, Jan Svorada and Tom Steels have raced in the US.

I still get a laugh when I think about that day. Just the other day someone at work asked me if I
ever raced against LANCE and I related that story to them(with the extra commentary that was
excluded from rbr) and they didn't believe me!

Do you think that is what Lance said to Ullrich on stage 9? "Work or get dropped then"

thanks warren. i did not realize the better sprinters in the breakaway were such specialists that
they could not sustain setting tempo for a few clics. and as jason said i did not factor in fatigue.

Its not that the sprinters can't sustain setting tempo, it is that the others won't work with them.
The non sprinters want to get away from them. If the 3 or 4 guys with less than great sprints worked
together to pull back Piil and Sachi, Nazon or Haselbecher would have won. So the non sprinters
attack and try to bridge solo, if a sprinter tags on, they sit up.

On OLN Phil and Paul mentioned Piil's win at Lancaster.
