  1. I was at Soulard Market over the weekend. I didn't know there was a free
cooking class there and it looks like fun. It's free! I don't know much
more about it but if and when I ever get some time free on a Saturday I
plan to go to at least one of the classes.

    Chefs at the Market

Soulard Market, 730 Carroll Street, St. Louis

    — Class taught by Michael Eagan, chef at Park West Grille. 10 a.m.
    Saturday; free.

I caught one of these cooking classes a couple years ago when I was at
the Soulard Market. I was a blast to watch. Alas, I forget the
instructor chef's (or is that chef instructor's?) name. He was doing
stuff with red snapper or some other sort of fish (IIRC). The chef used
a cart-like worktable that had a large overhead mirror so the "audience"
had a clear view of what he was doing and how how prepared the fish. I
enjoyed the class very much but couldn't stay long because chairs or
benches were not available. The cooking class was held in the courtyard
of the Market (south side, I think?).

If you do go to see one of these cooking classes, please do describe
them here 😉 The Soulard Market is truly a landmark. I always try to
visit it whenever possible if I'm in St. Louis.

  3. Re Chefs at Soulard:
Michael; if I didn't live so damned far away from St. Louis, I would be
there for sure; Soulard is one of my favorite places in St. Louis and
free cooking classes is an even bigger bonus! Carol

Our life may not always be the party we would have chosen, but while we
are here, we may as well dance!

It's my favorite thing about STL. I wish to GAWD we had something
like it here in Chicago...in fact every city should have such a fine
    market.

I like it all times of year, especially around the Christmas
holidays...very festive. You can pick out yer own LIVE xmas goose
    even...

Also in late February - March they start getting some good fresh
produce that's grown down south, e.g. Mississippi, Louisiana, etc...

On my way back from STL to Chicago I'd usually drag back bags of stuff
I'd bought there, whether I took the train or I drove back with a
    friend...

IIRC it's one of the oldest continually operating markets in the US
(over 200 years); it has to be the oldest west of the Mississippi at
    least...

Ya' know, it's getting pretty late in the Summer but maybe next year we
could organize a group to meet at Soulard. We could take in one of the
classes and hit a lunch spot. It wouldn't be a cook-in but we could call
it something... maybe an STLfoodie run or something...

That would be fun...STL is fairly centrally located for many of
    us...and I can't believe I haven't been there for TEN years now.
Several of my good friends who I used to visit frequently there moved
    elsewhere, so...

STL is a good food town...

[ And STL is still home to several *former* friends...I'm wondering if
there is still a "price" on my head, lol.... I think after more than
    a decade I might be *somewhat* safe... ;-) ]

The best things about StL are:
    1. Our zoo
    2. Our symphony

I'd happily trade Soulard market for a half a dozen Chicagoland
    taquerias.
