Sram chains Road/MTB What's the difference.

SRAM 9 speed chains are all compatible. In theory, some of the road-specific
chains are a little lighter weight (and perhaps less durable).

The shaping of the sideplates is a bit different, and the road chains
have a small punched-out hole in the plates, but there's no reason why
it wouldn't work. OTOH, those punched holes will act as a collection
point for dirt. It's your choice whether to use it or not; it will
fit and function, but it's not the recommended type for your
application.

No difference, it's just marketing hype.

There is nothing whatsoever "road-" or "mountain-specific" about any chain.

A road chain you just install on the bike. For a mountain chain, you
put it on exacly the same, and then you roll a spliff. Other than
that, no difference.

Quick, take that chain off your bike. Put it back in the box. Then take a big
magic marker and cross out the word Road from the box and put in the work MTB.
Then re-install the chain. Your bike will now work as it is supposed to. 🙂

Opened the box and for the heck of it read the installation sheet. Every
other chain they make is suitable for road or MTB according to the chart. I
installed it anyway and tried to go for a nightride. Could not get out of
the parking lot. It kept skipping on the cassette. No amount of adjusting
could get it right. The cassette looked good, I had a new one but did not
install it because I did not think it was required. I 'll do that tomorrow
and see how it goes. If not this chain goes on the road bike and I'll get a
new one for the MTB.

Sure you can but no need to use such an expensive chain. PC-950 will
work great, about $20. Use the least expensive compatible chain. No
difference-road/mtb, Plating and such makes them expensive but they do
not perform any better or last any longer.
