I think performance bikes had the sram pc68 silver chain on sale for $12.00
I'll look when I get home, all I wanted was the pc48, but the pc68 was
cheaper than the pc58.

I think performance bikes had the sram pc68 silver chain on sale for $12.00
I'll look when I get home, all I wanted was the pc48, but the pc68 was
cheaper than the pc58.

You'll be safe with an 8-speed chain. A 9-speed chain will probably
work, too.

8-speed Shimano cogs are a teensy bit wider than 9-speed cogs, so
there's a small chance that a 9-speed chain will be too narrow for your
setup. But the difference is so small (1.78 vs 1.8 mm cog width), I
wouldn't hesitate to try 9-speed chain on your 8-speed. In fact, I think
I've done it on my bike.

Select the chain based solely on the rear cassette. If it's an 8, buy
an 8-speed chain. I have used the PC48 with good results.

Yes, match the chain to the cogset-Sram PC-48 is a great choice. use
the least expensive compatible chain. keep it clean, lubed, check for
stretch, change often.

You can use any 8 or 9 speed chain.

With the availability of 8s chains, why use one designed for 9s? It is
thinner and will not shift as well as a 8s one. A 9s one 'may' work,
but a 8s one will work better. To imply there is no difference, like a
lot of MO places fdo, is incorrect.

I've never had good shifting with anything other than [censored] chains on their
cog sets.

If the reason you want the SRAM chain is because of the Power Link. The power
link will work with a [censored] chain, just fine. It does add $5 to the cost of
the chain. But if you are a chain cleaning zealot, it is worth the extra $.

I'm running a SRAM chain with fine results on a 7-speed hyperglide
Shimano setup. Granted, that's old Shimano stuff.

To answer the OP's question, probably *either* an 8 or 9 speed would
work. 9 speed *cassettes* need 9 speed chains; there's a tiny chance
that a 9 speed chain would bind on an 8sp cassette (from cogs being too
wide) but I doubt it strongly.
