I figured someone would ask.

It's "Squid-in-Training" so nothing with a motor yet... I'm only 20 and am
swamped with school. No time for playing around with 0.5bhp/lb machines
quite yet 😉 I hope to start out on something simple... maybe even an old
Honda Nighthawk or the like. I'd like to move up to a 600cc bike sometime
in the future, but getting on a bike in the first place is the hard part.

And to answer your question more completely, a Giant STP2 and GT Edge. 😉

I understand your situation. Seeing as you have time being on 2
wheels, (unmotorized, but hey - it's a start) and assuming you have
common sense and aren't klutzy, I'd say skip the small cc bikes and
get a 600. Especially if you are talking cruiser type bikes. If
sports bike is more your style, and older cbr (f3 or f2) would prolly
be a good choice too. Something with bars, not clip-ons. Reason I
am saying this, of those that I know starting out on sub-500 cc
bikes, they get used to the bike and want something bigger within 2
or 3 months. Ya may as well get what ya want from the get go, if you
can afford it...

My best friend got a 2000 Yamaha R6 last year. First bike he ever
owned. Infact, he had never even been on a bike before. (he is a
roadie cyclist) He takes it easy, and does just fine for being on
such a fast machine. The power starts to kick in around 8k rpm, so
keeping it lower gives no real surprizes.

There are a lot of boneheads that reportedly don't understand the power
involved and get way in over their heads, ending up dead or paralyzed.
Thus, the old guys on a.m.s always advocate starting out small, applying the
"everyone wants gobs of power they can't handle and we should protect them"
attitude to everyone, and I've bought into that somewhat.

Nope... Flat Florida here. I've gotten the chance to ride a dirt bike, but
no street machines yet. I'm thinking about signing up for MSF sometime
soon.
