squealing shimano XT parallel linkage brakes

The Shimano XT rotors are known to squeal. The 8" rotor will help.

He has V-brakes. Notice the "parallel linkage" in the subject.

XT pads are known to squeal/eat up pads. Salmon Koolstops are the way to
go.

Clean rims with green or black scruby pad and wipe down
with clean rag. Toe pads and make sure their clean also. I know with 13
rims and pads to look out after. My disc brakes are a whole world apart
lovely.

I'm not being flip - take them off and put on some Avids. Even try the
Shimano Deore (without the parallel junk)

It isn't a squeal, it's Shimano Whip Snake Warning System (TM).

I upgraded my wife's bike to all XT in 2000. After a month of
adjustments and pad changes trying to eliminate the squealing I
replaced them with Avids. They're just as powerful and no squeal.
Installed the XT's on my back up bike, thinking that the improved
braking would be worth the squeal a couple of rides per year. Then I
sold that bike to a friend, and had to listen to them every time she
rode with us. Another set of close out Avids and problem solved again.

But, just before I changed out the second bike I saw a tip (possibly
in this very group) to try reverse toe in (toe out?) on the pads. It
worked for a short, dry test ride on bike #2 before it got its
XT-otomy. Not sure how it would work in difficult conditions, but it
is cheaper than new brakes.

Yeah that was my solution too. But all I had to do was install Avid Rim
Wrangler pads on my XT parallel-push brakes to make the squeal go away.
The interesting thing is that when I tried a set of Avid Arch Rival brakes
on the same bike with the original pads from the XT brakes they squealed
even worse than full XT setup.

If there new style XT, try toeing the pads out. If that fails bin them and
get some XTRs.

Actually, the black XT shells are the main thing I wanted from the XT brakes
(Thanks Carla!) I finally found a home for the brakes themselves on my
beach cruiser, using ultra-cheapo Tektro 'Shimano' copy pads. With the
ultra-wide fenders combined with the narrow rims I was using, I needed the
massive extra width of the XTs. Nothing else save LX (which were on another
bike) would have worked.

The XT shells now have red Fibrax inserts and are mounted to simple Deore
brakes on my Prodigy. I just came in from riding it and they work
fantastically.
