  1. I'm a big fan of this site:

    http://www.stumptuous.com/weights.html

I've just started to do squats twice a week following these directions
and going past the 90 degree bend in my knees. All the "pros" in my gym
keep yelling at me and claim that I will screw up my knees.
In all honesty, my knees feel great so far. (I do about 4 sets of 9
reps using a little over my body weight).
What is the latest "scoop" on this? I certainly don't want to damage
anything, but it does feel "natural" to me to squat all the way down.
    Thanks
    Rog

Great site, but be careful not to emulate Krista's powerlifting
    stance:

    http://www.stumptuous.com/learnsquat4.html

Her knees are not over her toes, as has been mentioned by Keith Hobman
(I believe "fugly" was the technical term he used). Note that 90
degree bend in your knees will not actually get the tops of your
thighs parallel to the floor, much less ass to grass.

If you are a big fan of Krista's site, then you should have read her
squatting section. In the first page, Debunking the myths, she discusses
this as the very first myth.

There are a lot of good reasons to squat deep. At a minimum I'd suggest
    deep squats as the warm-up.

No one has yet said anything to me in my gym, but I am sure that they
think I'm going to destroy my knees. Very few of the guys even do
squats, and most of them use the Smith Machine or do Hack Squats. They
    don't even go to parallel.

In my youth, I was a competitive ice skater. A sit spin is a full squat
on one leg while spinning. Ok, there is no barbell involved, but
still... I used to do this over and over again every single day. If it
was going to screw up my knees, it would have.

I must agree, it has a high [censored] percentage. But it's around the
corner, and I *never* have to wait for someone else to get out of the
cage. Almost no one uses it.

How many non-[censored] gyms am I going to find in Lower Alabama, anyway?

The general advice on this group is to do squats and deads. I was very
reticent 'cos my knees and back have always been a bit iffy. I read
Kristas site and thought I'd give it a go. In my case it's worked
well. I have no worse problem with either knees or back and they are
probably both better than they were.

    anecdotal I know.

Great site, but be careful not to emulate Krista's powerlifting
    stance: http://www.stumptuous.com/learnsquat4.html

Her knees are not over her toes

For the low bar, wide stance, that's generally the idea. It is mainly
    for powerlifting after all.

This is clearly shown by the pics on that web page.

There are plenty of sports where deep squats are done, and some where
one-legged deep squats are done, like skating. It's hard to do much
rock or tree climbing without having to do a one-legged deep squat now
and then, There are parts of the world where most people do a deep
squat every time they have a [censored]. But if you hang out with people who
drive everywhere and whose only physical exercise is taken using
machines in gyms then deep squats are just one of many natural
pre-automobile physical activities that might injure you.

The human body is very adaptable. Anything you don't do for a long
time it gives up on being able to do.
