I've had a headset laying on the worktable for some time now and mean to get around to replacing my old indexed one.
One warning I see when reading on the subect is that the tube faces should be squared with the appropriate tool before installing the new headset.
I have a hard time understanding this. I am replacing a headset that performed adequately for years and showed no signs of binding other than the indexing that has developed. Why isn't that alone proof of a reasonably square tube face? How could the tube faces be misaligned and yet the original headset function well? And if that were the case, what now prevents the new headset from achieving the same success?

I think it's more intended as a disclaimer than an instruction. Obviously, if your frame has been faced in the past and is working adequately you don't need to re-face the frame. That can change, for instance, if you were to re-paint the frame. Facing would have to be re-done because paint may be on the head tube. Now, if your headset has been loose at any time and caused any kind of damage to the head tube, that's a whole different story.

It probably is. Your headtube sounds like it is parallel...many framesets have headtubes that are not...
