Since a new cassette is £30 I guess my old adage of
'wear out chain & block together then replace both' may
not apply.

Is it viable to just renew the smaller sprockets? Are
these economically available?

it is viable but sometimes not economical. SJS do individual
ones for about £6 each. You are mean't to get ones from the
same set for Shimano, see Sheldon Browns site for this. I
haven't usually bothered and my shifting is OK (with
downtube levers)

Personally I wouldn't bother. Some folks recommend frequent
chain replacement to slow down cassette wear but I prefer to
run both cassette and chain into the ground and when they
start to play up replace 'em both, job done!

I think it might have a fair bit of life left, but it's too
hard to say from what it looks like, really.

I would replace if chain skips on it, otherwise I'd just
carry on using
it.

Measure chain and replace chain if it's too worn* if you
want to prolong life of cassette and chainrings. THEN
replace sprockets or cassette if any skipping.

Worth changing just the smaller sprockets if you can get
them cheap, as these wear quicker than larger ones.

Prolly ok for road riding but through bitter experience I
found the problem of doing this on mtbs is that the new
chain won't skip on the old cassette when test riding
around the block at home but will start skipping shortly
after commencing an off-road epic putting a damper on the
rest of the ride, which is why I now always replace them
as a set :-(

....XT are £35. But OTOH Tiagra or Deore are only £20.

Take a look at Parker International I am sure they are
cheaper there.

Only marginally for a 105 once postage is added,
Chainreaction are post free. And Parker don't list mtb
cassettes if that's what our friend needs. (Nah, nah, na,
nah nah :-)

However, I will check out Parker in future for my own
purchases, ta very much :-)
