spoke length for front dynohub

  1. Hi all
    i'm new to this group
    i just bought a dynohub, to be installed in a 3 gear raleigh
    i googled extensively but couldn't find the correct length of spokes for
    lacing.
    parts specs are:
    GH6 front dynohub, 16 holes on the wide side, 8 (double?) holes on the
    narrow
    26x1 3/8 or 590mm 36holes sturmey archer rim
    i want to lace the standard way, is that 2 cross?
    can anyone help with correct spoke length on each side and lacing pattern?

    There's a very thorough document on wheelbuilding with dynohubs that
    originated at sturmey archer. You can find it in a google search and it
    will most likely have the information you need.

    Failing that you can take measurements of the hub and rim, and input them
    into any spoke calculator that can handle different-sized flanges. I do
    believe the standard lacing is 2 cross, I could check one of my wheels for
    you if are unable to find this out.

    Also, I believe that sturmey archer rim is steel? If you're taking the
    time to make a handbuilt wheel and haven't already got the spokes, you
    would do better with a sturdy double-wall aluminum rim, it will bulid a
    much lighter wheel that's just as strong or stronger.

    i think not, the holes on the small side of the hub are "key holes",
    made for two spokes in each AFAIK.

    As has been mentioned your hub is meant for use with 32 spokes, and if
    your rim has 36 spokes it would be less than desirable to build them
    up together into a wheel. One on line calculator does have the SA
    dynohub dimensions in its database, see

    It doesn't have the ERD for an old Sturmey Archer Steel rim.

    Typical lacing for the SA dynohub is 2 cross for the high flange and 3
    cross for the low flange. You can go 1 cross or radial for the high
    flange if you prefer, the steel flange is less likely to fail under
    radial spoking than aluminum hubs.

    Harris cyclery lists a 32 hole 590 alloy Sun rim which you could use,
    and they could probably sell you appropriate length spokes as well.

    This would make for a wheel that has some useful braking in wet
    weather, and would work well with a nice relatively high pressure tire
    like the Continental.

    I do have some spare NOS 32 hole Dynohub equipped wheels with 590
    Sturmey Archer steel rims, if you're in the US and want to buy one let
    me know. Or I have NOS 32 hole Sturmey steel 590 rims and original
    spokes that came out of a NOS wheel as well. It's probably not worth
    the cost of shipping to anywhere else. I'd encourage you to consider
    the aluminum rim from Harris though unless you plan to ride the bike
    only in fair weather.

    The Sturmey Archer Dynohub only produces about 1.8 Watts so a standard
    3 Watt generator light will not work well. Reflectalite sells a
    halogen bulb suited to the Dynohub, see
    http://www.reflectalite.com/lightmodel.html#anchor439407
    for a listing. They take Paypal and ship internationally so it's
    convenient to order from them.
