You have to have a set-top box that has a slot for a top-up TV card. If
    you
haven't one of these, you need a new set-top box.

I have a new set top box but no slot, I was assuming that you get some
    sort of encription code,

You need a new set top box with slot for top-up TV card then ;-)

that's a bit daft, why don't they all have them? mine is a fairly high
    range Philips

Not going to do it anyway, freeview means just
that in my book, not a lead on for Top-up (ie pay) TV. I am quite happy
to wait until 1900 for itv2 (or even watch live at weekends). Anything
else I want to watch I will rent or buy a DVD, it is cheaper.

    Your choice to make :-)

quite, if I wanted to pay for rubbish I would have got Sky. Certainly
the scrambled channels that appear on the menu do not seem worth paying
    for.

BTW Tim you mentioned that I could program the DTR500, I tried this
morning but it just said no timers specified, does this mean I haven't
set it up or it is not available? I have just left it tuned into itv2
and set the DVDR to record EXT2 this afternoon.

Dunno, I'm not the person behind the making of that decision ;-)

AIUI on that model, hit the Guide button, scroll to the channel and
programme you want, select with Red button. You can then adjust the
timings presented (add a few minutes to the end, for example, to allow
for late running programmes), then press Red again.

A good idea to make sure it works with something less vital than Le
    Tour though.

This is English? It conveys nothing -- is that nice Wolfgang Amadeus
    playing??

When Freeview replaced On-ITV-Digital it was all free to view, so the
new boxes came without card slots. Then TUTV thought, "Hey we could
buy some space and get people with the old On-ITV-Digital boxes to pay
us some money. Many manufacturers can't be bothered making boxes for
what is after all a very small market.

no, someone even older, Macca I think he's called ;-)
nice to see the Oedipal noun is OK on prime time TV if it's for a good
    cause!
