My trainer said the same thing last night....."Wait til you start
seeing results....you will be happy." She said she is going to make me
a "hot" woman. She said this in front of my 26 year old daughter who
thinks I am going there so I do not get a heart attack and die. I don't
think my daughter wants to think of her mother as "hot". I know I
never thought of my mother in that way. But Moms in the 50's and early
60's wore aprons and stayed home alot. If I put an apron on, my kids
would fall over in a dead faint. I will try all this muscle toning
madness and see where it leads. Can't hurt I guess. Well maybe it can.
;-) Maybe the upper body strength will help.
    Maggie

I do 5 minutes three times a week with weights for upper body strength.
I started just on the principle that building muscles is good for
diabetes. When I started biking I decided it was good for balance in my
shoulder muscles--if you use your muscles only one way you can have
joint problems. I've increased the weight but five minutes is as much
as I have the patience for.

    I don't do boring exercise--that is why I ride a bike (and I don't like
social exercise, so don't do gyms). Except now I've started swimming
with a masters swim club--the idea of doing a sprint triathlon has
inspired me to get into what I used to think was the most boring
exercise of all: swimming in a pool. I find I'm not bored; I'm too busy
struggling to remember all the things I'm supposed to do. It requires
real coordination, which I'm not sure I can manage.

I've lost 55 lbs. in a little over a year and I do credit
muscle-building exercise for my not being saggy.

Did she use my goal of riding
25 miles to convince me to use the weights

Yes. People who hang around gyms are obsessive in an unhealthy,
narcissistic way (unlike us!), and should be avoided, especially if it's in
their financial self-interest to keep you coming back.

Do it agressively on a short hill 🙂 Or, acelerate away from a
    chasing bow-wow.

I do what you do on a long extended (for me) climb.

I started out with riding a bike for fun, ended up in a gym

Don't let anyone turn a fun activity into work. Better to ride less and
enjoy it then make a job out of it and have no fun.

I'm pretty sure you could do the 25 mile ride today, because when you're
riding with a big group, you just keep riding. It's not going to be
anywhere near as difficult as you think it is.

I agree. Maggie shouldn't have any problems with the 25 miles. In fact,
she'll probably be ready for a century with all this exercise 🙂

I work with a lot of non-biking people and they can't believe someone can
ride their bike for 40-50 miles and live to tell about it. Those miles go
by quickly when you're talking with your friends and enjoying the scenery.

I was back in the gym last night. And I actually DID have fun. I have
a piece of paper that I carry around which tells me which machine to go
to and how many reps to do so I see results. Some of the machines are
so complicated. It takes a while to figure out how to get into them. I
love that ab cruncher. I may be able to ride 25 miles but I can't prove
it to myself right now. All it does is rain in Jersey. The weather has
been horrible. Sounds like a hurricane this morning. I guess that is
why the gym is packed every night. I watched a kickboxing class last
night and I was amazed. I KNOW I am not ready for that one. The guy who
teaches the class is young and very much in shape. He is relentless
with his kicks and punches and the class is non stop. I imagine you
must work out every muscle in your body when you take a kickboxing
class. I am thinking about taking the pilates or yoga classes. Maybe
the free weight class. All I know is, I owe this to a bicycle. What
started out to be a fun thing to do seems to have changed my life in
the area of exercise in general. I'm even eating heathier foods and I
feel less stressed. Hopefully the weather will improve eventually and I
can go outside and prove to myself how far I can ride. I can't ride in
bad weather like some of you do. I do not have enough outdoor riding
experience and I really don't want to break any bones. I am beginning
to feel confident that when May arrives, I will be able to ride 25
miles. I am going back to Lake Tahoe in May and the slopes will still
be open. I may even be in shape this time to actually ski. I am
starting to believe that once you get in shape, nothing is off limits.
I may just play volleyball this summer on the beach and not wish to die
like I did last summer. That would be so Sweeeeeet! Through wanting to
ride my bike again, I am bringing myself back to good health and
stamina. I guess its never too late.

    Maggie,

If you continue to train like you are the rest of the winter your 25 mile ride will be like a walk in the park.

And we're _sure_ he was the only one, _ever_ to do such a thing.

Point is, it don't take much upper body to ride and ride fast.

Gee I don't pull on the bars climbing hills. I sit and put my hands

Thanks for the tip - I've been doing this in the flats, trying to be light
on the bike, and light on the handlebars, especially - more aerodynamic.
Thought I'd try it on the hills and had a really great ride just now,
hitting one of the steeper, longer hills I hadn't tried before in my
neighborhood - went up it like a rocket, too. Cool! This is how I remember
when riding as a kid in college. Thx for reminding me. ;-)
