  1. Hi everyone. I am somewhat new to the forums so forgive me if this is an old question. I have been cycling now for about 8 years, just for the fun of it. I have a 1UP indoor training that I have been using for the past several years during the winter (no fellas...I am not man enough to bear the cold). I have been thinking about getting a couple of spinervals DVD's for indoor use.

Does anyone use these? Any benefit? Like them? Also...can anyone recommend a couple to start with. My training style on the 1UP is mostly just spinning for endurance, but I'd like a new challenge.

    Thanks.

  2. I just bought some VHS tapes from Spinerval on close-out. My wife uses the trainer a few times a week and likes to have someone tell her what to do instead of just pedalling along with her Ipod.

The tapes are a bit outdated, so you may want to buy some of the more recent DVD's that they have. Look for the higher numbered ones.

The TT tapes have real short efforts followed by real short rests. No 10' or 20' steady-state stuff, but the tapes work as a good distraction if you are looking for a fly-by-night workout.

Also, as a pure road-racer, his company seems to be geared towards Tri's mainly. There are probably some really awesome roadie tapes out there somewhere, but I've never looked into other options.

I'd like to have some Euro ex-pro selling some of these. That would be more my style.

Go to the Spinervals web site for a description of their entire series.

I own about 6 or 8 of them and can vouch for the fact that they add structure to your trainer rides. If you just pop a TDF tape in the VCR or a movie or something you end up aimlessly riding the trainer without accomplishing anything in particular except getting saddle time. (Out on the road we call those "junk miles".) So the Spinervals tapes/DVDs can play an important part in your overall training program.

You also might want to look at the CTS (Carmichael Training Systems) DVDs, too. I own a couple of those and think they are very useful as well.

  4. I have about half of the spinervals and all the Train Right DVDs, they are helpful and I do recommend them, I would recommend Spinervals Aerobase workouts, they are great for offseason workouts on a trainer, I believe the volume numbers are 16,17,18,& 20 for starters. (Hey coach Troy if ya read this ya should hook me up with some free Spinerval for the plug😄)

  5. Can't comment on the Spinerval DVD's but I have both CTS Train Right Climbing DVD's and find them very good - they add structure to the workout, make the time pass quicker (but not quick enough 😉 ) and give you a pretty good workout as well 😎

  6. Thanks for the advice so far. I will check the spinervals site.

I'm using a 1Up trainer and own 12 Spinervals DVDs. Basically I bought a few of the Fitness series workouts first, and then I started buying the workouts that tended to train my weakness areas. While I'm not ready to go pro or anything, I can say the Spinervals workouts have gone a long way towards making me a lot stronger on the bike. It’s a great feeling to have that added confidence that improved fitness brings.

After having a couple of serious crashes during training on wet roads or during rain storms - I just hit the trainer and save the road for a day that is a little better. Also if you are pinched for time, you can get a fantastic workout done in.

For me having only to listen to Troy and do has been the best thing going. Doing the old magazine workouts where such a bore, and I cheated so much because I was always looking at the clock for when the interval ended. With my efforts, energy, and attention focused on the interval at hand, I do what I'm told until I'm told to rest - sounds goofy, but it's just too easy.

The 1Up web page sells the DVDs for the same price as the Spinervals web page, but the shipping is FREE!
