speed of pro cyclists?

No, but considering that I've done 75 km/hr up a slight hill behind an 18 wheeler, I don't find Mario at 75 particularly interesting. Rompelberg has done over 240 km/hr on a bike and behind a vehicle with a windshield, so like I said, with enough gears and a vehicle to draft behind you can go crazy speeds (need some leg speed too).

TTing is completely different. You are at the mercy of the wind.

Training with Pros, they generally are pretty lazy between races so it would be maybe 28kph, slower than most weekend warrior bunches. But I remember once doing 5 hours at 38kph with a pro team in Belgium on a training ride as the guys were all trying to show a bit of p*nis to each other. Generally most races will be at 42 to 44 kph maybe, it all depends on conditions... Amateurs will ride at 38 to 40, maybe a little more.

I read some where LA can maintain 34mph on flat road for twenty minutes (less than twelve miles). A "good" recreational rider(me) can maintain 20mph on the same road/time. An average club rider(my goal) can maintain 23mph on the same road/time. With that said I would predict LA would probably be around 31mph for a twenty mile flat ride. That would be incouraging to watch but discouraging to ride with.

Yeah you really have to specify the type of ride it is. An average speed over a certain distance, and don't forget to include the altitude changes. That's more important than the distance almost. 34km/hr isn't much on flat ground, but if it's with 1000m of climbing, then it's a hell of a feat to pull off. And yes, wind is important too.
But don't shun the guy for asking about 'average speed'. I could just have easily asked that question. Curiosity is all, I'm a cycling newbie too more or less.
But this is a general response to numerous posts on the first page....

Check out the Polar stats on Servais Knaven. Finished 120th on Stage 14 of the 2004 TDF - a flat stage. He was 15:10 down from the leader.

Avg 26.567 mph @ 126 bpm, Max 44.055 mph @ 166 bpm !

I wish I were that fast without training too much!
That's cool!

sounds easy until you're at the bottom of Mt Alto (?) looking up, up, up and wishing you had that 28 on the back. LOL.
