Specialized Turbo Pro Cyclocomputer question

I have one of these. The %grade feature has dubios accuracy unless the
grade is very long and very constant. On short or uneven climbs, sampling
error makes a huge difference.

I have one on each bike. The altimeter is iffy on slow inclines but I love
to check the numbers. It is accurate to itself and will give you an estimate
as to the steepness of the hills that you climb.

The temp gauge is useless but all the other funcitons are great.

I have the wireless and it never has failed.

Is the temperature function "useless" because the temperature it
shows is wrong, or only because you don't care to know what the
temperature is?

If the temperature is incorrect then the altimeter is also likely
to be inaccurate since accurate air temperature, along with barometric
pressure, measurements are required to estimate altitude changes.

I have both the Avocet 50 (at least 10 years old) and the Specialized Turbo
Pro (4 years old) on different bikes. I prefer the Turbo Pro. I find
altitude and inclination to be reasonably accurate with steady grades. I
believe the Turbo updates every 7 seconds. If your grade changes are not
short or abrupt then you will get good readings. It doesn't take to long to
get a sense of where it performs well and when to expect it to be stupid.

As for overall elevation gain they are both very good. HOWEVER, they
calculate gain differently. I believe the 50 requires a 30 foot increase
before it acknowledges a gain. You can ride 25 ft rollers all day and you
will have no gain. If you live in an area with constant small continual
elevation changes your legs quickly realize that you are doing real climbing
that you get no credit for. The Turbo Pro updates based on a 6 or 7 foot
minimum increase. I feel like it is much more representative of your real
efforts.

I've ridden the Blue Ridge Parkway with both. If you do long steady climbs
with continuous grades the results will be almost identical. They both track
the elevation markings at the overlooks very closely.

I enjoy the Turbo and leave it on % Grade when its hilly. It doesn't change
the terrain but it is entertaining. FYI, I believe Jobst Brandt was involved
with the programming of the Avocet 50. (Jobst please correct me if I am
incorrect.

Thanks for the info. Thats why I asked. I have had 4 or 5 of the Avocets
over the last 15 years and find the accuraccy fairly good....till it craps
out, then they suck. they last about 2 maybe 3 years then the altitude
function goes nuts... Thats why I am looking at the Turbo Pro. Living in
Colorado I have plenty of hills to play on.
