spd pedal clicking under pressure

Could be bearing failure. as unlikely as it may seem, i've managed to crush
a couple of bearings in my spds. A possibility perhaps

try pulling the pedal and greasing the threads before installing
back on the crank. that's the cheapest, easiest problem to fix.

Yeah. I'd do that, and if that didn't fix it, I'd pull the pedals
apart, inspect the axles and if they looked OK, repack the thing.

Also make sure the crank isn't starting to crack at the pedal hole.

It's common for the axles to wear, which can cause a click. The problem
is that the axle bends a little under load, loading the bearing unevenly.
So this bearing needs some preload. Don't adjust it so it spins too
freely. They're not always adjusted correctly at the factory.

However, the first thing I'd check for pedal clicks is my cleats. If
they're screwed in tight and not worn, try a little lube -- between the
pedal and cleat, and the cleat and shoe.

I hate clicks!

I've had this "problem" with every brand, make and model of clipless
pedal I've owned all the way back to the original look "brick" models up
to the C.B. EggBeaters I use now. It's not the pedal, but the
cleat/pedal interface that's clicking (to determine this, smear a little
grease on the cleat where ot's held by the pedal).
