Graunchy PD-M535 SPDs need servicing. Dismantle, clean. Need new bearings (which are supposed to be 3/32", although there were only 56 in there instead of the claimed 60, and one was rattling loose inside the body - must have been a bad day in t'Shimano mill).
PD-M535, M323 and M324 don't have the removable "cartridge" axle and need the rare-as-rocking-horse-poo XT adjustment tool for the cone and locknut.
Cost of bearings : £ 4 Cost of tool : £20
Cost of new M520 SPDs: £26 and comes with new cleats which are between £10 and £12 bought separately.
Just in case you decide to go down the new pedal route, you can get M520's from CycleXpress for £22 with free delivery:
I supported my local LBS, even though they've had my DT rims on order for 8 weeks now (it's actually Madison's fault - major warehouse problems apparently).

It's been my experience that Madison always have major warehouse problems , and if you ask them to give more detail they won't. Some retailers get their shimano stuff from germany. It's quicker. TerryJ
