  1. I live in the general vicinity of the Disneyland area, and am just wondering what the story is on
running in this fire-polluted air. My air seems ostensibly "normal" at this point (I think I'm at
least 30-35 miles from any fires), but I've seen a couple of stories on the TV news about the
dangers of outdoors exercise. (Something called "PM-10," perhaps?)

Does anyone have any wisdom on the subject? Unfortunately, I don't really have an indoor place to
run, though I've heard "talk" about people going to a large local mall in the early hours, before
    the stores open?

    Frustrated,
    M.

  2. Mike is seeking wisdom in a jogging group. That's cute. Impossible, but cute.

  3. I ran the other day for sixteen miles and the air was clean. The days before that, if I stepped
outside and smelled smoke, I didn't run. There is an onshore wind now that is blowing all the smoke
and ash Northeast all the way to Vegas.

Not exactly an expert opinion, but after watching countless hours of news coverage of the fire,
that's the best I can come up with. "Mike G." <[email hidden]> wrote in message

Well, I live in Monarch Beach and coach high school track/xc, and I can tell you this much. A lot of
x-c meets have been cancelled until saturday, especially in San Diego. The college league x-c meets
have been moved out of the area. Thus, I'd caution you to be careful before the weekend, as there is
particulate matter that you can't necessarily see but which can do damage to your lungs.

The mess for us really started a week ago at the Mt. Sac Invitational, which is the largest cross
country meet in the world. It was abysmally hot. They cut the non-sweepstakes events to 2 miles. My
team did not run at all after Mt Sac (but we did lift weights) until thursday, which was a light
workout ahead of racing on the weekend, and the layoff did not seem to hurt us.

Things are probably about ok again, especially at the beach areas. Go somewhere like Huntington.

check out these sites. they give you some idea of the air quality. www.aqmd.gov/smog/areamap.html

just because you're 30-35 miles away doesn't mean that you are safe. we had ash falling all over
here for the last couple of days here in riverside. the nearest fires are in the SB national
forest/lake arrowhead/big bear. it all depends on the winds. but, seems like the air quality is
improving. today is a beautiful day outside.

i would not run outside if the air quality is unhealthy. yesterday a colleague of mine went running.
he turned back after a couple of miles because he could feel there was something wrong with his
lungs. two other colleagues were feeling dizzy after working outside on the weekend.

apparently, the fine particles (which are invisible) can get lodged in your lungs and cause lung
cancer and other such bad things in the long run. so, better to be careful.

It's not so much the distance that counts, but which direction the wind is blowing which influences
the quality of the air. Under most situations, indoor air is not as good as outdoor air.

No wisdom, but what I did--I'm about ten miles northwest of you. I don't run on weekends, and I
skipped my run on Thursday, the 23d, when the smoke and cinders were at their worst. I've run every
weekday since except Wednesday, the 29th, when I played a (walking) round of golf.

Caveat: I'm recovering from a knee problem so these were very short easy run/walk sessions, and I
hadn't run for about two months before the 24th. I got out of breath easily, but nothing I could
blame on the level of smoke we had.

By today (Friday), with the strong on-shore winds, the air is as pure as it ever is going to get
(and may be washed by rain later in the evening).

Today (friday) the air seems much clearer, and is probably safe. I live at the base of the S.B.
mountains below the fires in the Lake Arrowhead area. The air seems quite clear today, given the
onshore winds and the approaching rain/snow. I skipped running most of this week, but I'm going to
try a long one tomorrow. Several of my friends did 20 milers today without problems.

BTW, Jobs - how are you doing? Will you run the Mission Inn next weekend?

Thanks for those links...heck, they even explained to me what "PM-10"
    is. 🙂

Sounds like it's ok for me to run locally.

    hi bob

i'm doing fine. just picked up my bib #s for the race. i'm running both the 5K and 10K this time.
training has not been good - only one run so far this week. so, i'm planning to run the 5K hard and
    take the 10K easy.

how about you? are you running?

    regards jobs

Hello Jobs, I'm going to miss the Mission Inn this year. I'm running the Tucson marathon next
month. I was going to do a 22 miler today, but postponed it because of the fires. I'm going to do
my last long run next weekend.

good luck with tucson, bob. will be looking forward to reading your report.
