Southbank Races Today

Yeah, I was at the back for a while and there was a pretty big stack...
Probably 6 or 7 guys went down pretty hard on the far side of a roundabout,
and they'd only been going for 8 or 9 minutes when it happened.

Overall it was a good race though, shame about the [censored] weather. Hopefully
the next race at Surfers will be better...

It was 40kph in C grade, there was a headwind down the back straight which
kept speeds down a bit. Two guys went away at around the halfway mark and
stayed away till the line.On the 2nd last lap there was a big stack at the
dodgy
roundabout chicane, 6 or 7 riders down. I nearly evaded the carnage but
ended
up over the bars having to run over my teammate and another guy then got run
over myself and his chainring went up my arm and back. From the marks I
think
it was a 10 speed dura-ace and his chain needs cleaning 🙂 I just got 7
stitches in
my elbow. Getting all the bikes and riders up was worse than untangling the
christmas tree lights 🙂 Luckily noone seriously hurt but one poor guy had
heaps
of blood all over his face from some nasty gashes to his forehead.

B grade race was good, one of our club members was up there the whole way,
but there were some seriously fast sprinters in the field, some who'd been
racing
overseas all year. Can't remember who won though.

Elite race was good, just a pity it [censored] down the whole way. There was a 5
man
breakaway, with brisbane locals Jaaron Poad from Velo bikes (who was leading
the recent Tour of Qld leader for most of the way), Jayson Austin from MB
Coaching
(who won gold at the World Track Masters recently) and last years winner
Mark
Roland (??), together with superstars Robbie McEwen (Lotto Domo) and Allan
Davis (Liberty Seguros). Davis is a sprinter to watch, I read that Zabel
rates him
and wants to be his leadout man in his twilight years. David Betts went down
early
and the field was neutralized for a while.

The lead went to 20 seconds then 30 then they had the whole length of the
straight on
the main bunch with about 5 or 6 laps to go. Brad McGee, Matt White, Matt
Wilson,
Baden Cooke all up near the front but the pack didn't seem to work to catch
the
lead bunch. None of the FdeJeux boys looked very happy to be there. 2 laps
to go and
it was obvious that someone in the 5 man break was going to have to try and
escape to
avoid a McEwen sprint finish. Poad and Davis jumped and stayed away for the
win with
Davis coming around Poad with about 100m to go. Robbie pulled away from
Roland
and Austin, who rode a fantastic race, but couldn't bridge across to the two
leaders. Not
sure who won the bunch sprint for 6th. I saw Cadel Evans make the sign of
the cross as
he finished - I'm sure he was just happy not to break a collarbone again 🙂

How's that, can I get a job at cyclingnews.com now?

I don't know what speeds they were doing - in the dry I reckon they would
avg close
to 50, but it was interesting watching the cornering styles, I noticed
Cookey corners
with the pedals at 9 and 3 oclock not outside pedal down.
