South coast advice?

The New Forest is quite nice to cycle in, pretty flat (the bits I've done).
You could probably do something like New Forest, ferry to Yarmouth from
Lymington, cycle a bit round island and end up at Ryde, ferry to Pompey,
cycle to hastings. The ferry from ryde is very quick, but if you dont mind
chancing it you could try the hovercraft just before the pier (its on the RH
side of the pier looking out to sea) which goes to Southsea, and if they
cant take you go for the ferry from the pier to Psmouth. There is a book
called something like 'cycling routes in hampshire' (try a search on amazon)
which would cover a lot of what you are looking for.

Isle of Wight is great cycling territory but it only takes a day.
Throw in the New Forest and/or the South Downs and you've got an
excellent trip all linked together by ferries.

You are joking, right? "Camping rules for single men"? Are you really
saying that camp sites will ban you merely for being male? Is that

The Flowerpots at Cheriton makes a good stopover. Multiple
award-winning real-ale, a campsite out the back, on the edge of the
South Downs, good pub grub, lovely. They do prefer that you to book in
advance, though. And they have a beer festival over the August Bank
Holiday weekend.

'tis true; many of the sites in Dorset and the IOW say _Families only_
presumably to deter gangs of loud drunken youths, not sure how they
would stand up in a court of law, easier just to avoid them. Even the
one in Beddgelert in Snowdonia says it reserves the right to refuse
single sex groups but have never had any problem. Am going to one in
Dorset next month which is advance bookings only for single sex groups
and double the deposit. Most of the sites are fairly hefty prices
anyway and charge the same for a pea pod tent as a Winnebago.
The AA guide usually lists restrictions, or try www.interhike.com

There is a municipal (I think) site in Chichester, apart from that
nothing springs to mind along the coast to Hastings. There is an
excellent one in Lytchett Minster which welcomes single male cyclists
but probably out of the way for IOW.

Actually just found a couple of other campsites in Newhaven and
Bishopstone just before Seaford, both an easy days ride along the
coast from Chichester.

Why not head inland to the South Downs? Unidiscovered beauty IMHO. Much more
interesting than the flat coastal plain between Portsmouth and Brighton.

I'd go along with that but most of the roads straddle rather than run
along the Downs, so a lot of ups as well as Downs, and also a lot
further. The lanes N of the Downs from Beeding to Lewes are fairly
flat and quiet, but the best way to see everything is from the SDW.

One route that I know of is to leave Portsmouth by the ferry to
Hayling Island (and thereby avoid the heavy traffic on the northern
routes out of Portsmouth). Cycle north off Hayling using the cycle
path on the old railway track route (on the west side of the island)
and then through Havant to pick up the myriad of lanes that run along
the South Downs in the direction of Chichester; Or you can choose a
flatter route east along the A259.

In Portsmouth, the historic dockyard is very good, especially the Mary
Rose museum. If time is short, the castle at Southsea is well worth a
visit.

At Fishbourne, just west of Chichester, there is a Roman palace that
is said to be worth a visit if you are passing.
