Source for seat-post bolt?

Since you've got a matching seatpost complete why don't you measure a bolt?

Since you've got a matching seatpost complete why don't you measure a bolt?

I did, but I cannot determine the threads. And the guys at the hardware
store were no help.

I had the bolt shear on the 25 year old Gipiemme single bolt clamp post
on my track bike.

I also tried the hardware store and farm supply thing to no avail.

I wandered into a local industrial fastener shop and asked for a
replacement they guy behind the counter asked me "how many", I said "one".

He laughed and disappeared for about 10 minutes and came back with a
matching bolt although it was black oxide finish rather than silver and
said "no charge". I said "thanks", smiled and proceeded on my way.

A quick shot of silver craft lacquer, installation and I was back in the
saddle again. It has survived a couple of years of big ass abuse
without failing.

So the moral of this story is to try an industrial fastener store, be
polite and look poor.

You really cared about matching the finish of a seatpost binder bolt? Who

M8 x 1.00 bolts are very hard to find. I know, I've been hunting them
down to restore some GB quill stems which use a whitworth bolt which
is a class-B fit for an M8 x 1.00 (fine pitch) bolt.

I think that many seat binder bolts might be M8 x 1.00. I have read
that the additional threads usually make a stronger bolt. M8 x 1.00
bolts are common on stem binders.

I found them at Pep Boys. But, they were hex-head bolts, not allen
bolts. If you're looking for Allen bolts, I recommend a bicycle
retailer like www.sheldonbrown.com, especially if you are looking for
stainless steel.

Don't even DREAM about finding them in chrome - almost nobody makes
chromed bolts these days.

I have never seen an M7 bolt on a bicycle. They probably exist; I've
just never encountered one. M8, M6, M5, M4 are ubiquitous, M7, rare.
Some stems ( 3TTT Record pre-1980 ) use 7mm allen wrenches. I bet
3TTT got a kickback from sears for every 7mm allen-head bolt that they
sold.

Tempting. The seatpost is the only non-NOS or mint part on the bike. If
you had 27.2 it would be a done deal, but I don't know how the shim
will work with the point on the seat lug. Plus I'll still have an out
of commision seatpost in need of a bolt!

Today I went to town and tried the 2 industrial machine supply places.
Neither had M8x1.0 with a socket head, only hex head which won't work.
The Würth store said they could get me a box of 100 if I wanted them
to order it from Germany. No go. The town has a fair amount of maritime
industry, so these stores are as well stocked as it is going to get
around here.

Anyone feel like helping me out? Good excuse to go browse some fun
stores! ;-)

Those are all M8 with the 1.25 pitch threads which is the normal
"coarse" threading. I need with the 1.0 fine threading.

Next time you come across a Vitus 992, look under the saddle. You'll
encounter two of them in the rail clamp.

One of them broke on my 992 several years ago. M7 socket head cap
screws are for all intents and purposes impossible to find in the US.
A polite letter (in French) to the factory got me three replacement
bolts, gratis. A second one subsequently broke so I'm now down to a
single spare. :-|
