Does anyone know a good source for such batteries? My old batter used 10 batteries wired together, only mark is #0202, and I think was rated at 6 amp/hours.
Try the electronic parts supplier called Digi-key (www.digi-key.com). In their catalog they show a bunch of different configurations they will make up using NiNH, NiCad or Lithium.

Solder-tag AA cells are cheap and common, and around 1.8 AHr these days. You can wire them in parallel for greater capacity.

NiMH cells shouldn't be wired in parallel, at least not for charging.
This is because the voltage rises with increasing charge until the fully-charged state, and then DROPS. This means that the first cell charged will bleed charge away from its companion. And this will depress the charge on the companion even further.

Realgoods.com has NiMH D sized batteries as well as chargers. If you want to do it yourself you can try putting the batteries in a pvc pipe with adapters that take a screw on end. Drill a hole in the ends for the wires and use two springs out of an old flashlight.

I am in the process of making batteries holders from PVC pipe and commercial battery holders billcotton.combicycle electric.htmOpen ↗ There are different wall thickness for various out side diameters pcv pipes. 1/2 schedule 40, I use for AA cells, 1 inch schedule 40 for C cells. 1-1/4 schedule 40 for D cells. I have made a pack of three single AA batteries holders glued and wired in series together and they fit into a 1-1/4 diameter thin wall pvc pipe. That pipe is pictured with a converted 15 LED Mag type flashlight. Another picture is of another Converted LED flashlight using ½ pvc and an elbow, the two light form twin LED light. I have made 12 volts batteries packs from an 8 cell and a 2 cells holders for AA NiMH cells. 2000 are available for a dollar each. I charge the cells separately in a computer control for each cell charger. Two packs give me 4 amp hours and weighs 1 pound 7 ounces, a 4 amp hour gel cell that is used for my 10 and 20 watts halogen weighs 4 pounds.
