Source for 27" road tires

Getting a new bike is a bit more expensive than some new 27" Bontrager tires, which, if not in
stock, can be ordered by any dealer that sells TREK, Fisher, LeMond or Bontrager.

Relatively crummy 27 x 1 1/8 tires can be had at Wal-Mart, which can be handy in an emergency.

Better ones are available at a number of places, as already observed by two other posters.

I didn't say I don't use them...but they're a pain to get on and off, they are one-size-fits-what-it-
fits, and they're gumwalls. That said, there's one on the old Puch that I got in trade for the
services of assembling a bike for a friend. (This Puch is one of the ones that was targeted at the
British market; full chainguard, rear rack, generator with front and rear lights, Brooks leather
saddle, 3-speed, etc. It weighs at least as much as the next two heaviest bikes in the patio fleet
combined. But it goes well with my tweed jacket for a spin through certain neighborhoods...)

According to sheldonbrown.com, tire sizes such as "27" originally measured the _outside_ diameter
of the tire. But, different tire widths made those measurements inaccurate, so now we go by
inside diameter, 27" is 630 mm, 700c (which is a french name that has nothing to do with
millimeters) is 622 mm.

For a wired-on tire, you are looking at something like 270grams for a very good tire. For a folding
tire (and be sure your rims are hooked in order to hold onto the folding tires), you can get a 250
gram tire.

1. www.harriscyclery.com has some excellent avocet (IRC) racing tires (27x7/8, about a 23 mm tire),
folding, slicks, maybe about 220g, new old stock. Only appropriate if you're small (160 lbs?),
or for the front wheel.

2. panaracer pasela comes in wired and folding versions, and panaracer is original equipment for
schwinn (LeTour tires) and panasonic bicycles of the 1970's and 1980's. Available in 27x1, 27x1
1/8, and 27x1 1/4.

3. I have purchased some nice cheap 27x1 1/8 tires from performance
bike, they have them with kevlar belts, and without.

4. Other possibilities include ebay for limited production runs of IRC tires.

I'm assuming you're looking for something better than $7 tiawan and thailand 27x1 1/4 monster tires
- these are easily available at kmart.

Hi, yes Nashbar has a good selection of 27" tires. If you are on a budget the Prima 2 Plus is a good
one. I put about a 1000[thousand] miles on a set of the Prima 2 Plus, I had no flats and they had
many miles left in them, the front was like new. I replaced them with a set of Continental Ultra
Gatorskins, because I had the urge to upgrade, certainly not out of necessity. If budget is not a
consideration, then the Gatorskin would be a good choice.

Contrary, to what is often said by LBS and others, there is still a very good variety and selection
of 27" tires. Now with wheels the selection is somewhat limited, but they are certainly available.

sounds like you need a new LBS. i've get over 3000-mi, a year's commute, on the Avenir 27-1/4 w/
Kelvar belt on the FG commuter. they're OK after 3000-mi but i change them because it's not worth
the risk/hassle. maybe one flat/yr. REI, $15.

Summarizing faq for you’re specific question:

27 outside diameter (nominal) goes on a 630mm ISO standard bead diameter

700C (earliest wide width variants probably nominally matched 700mm outside diameter at one time) 622mm ISO standard bead diameter.

650C French proximates many 26” medium width tires and uses a 571mm ISO standard bead diameter.

As for the mountain biking all tires the same size –only in label, not actual sizes.
