Did you ever try your SOS on top of grape jelly toast. Takes

Heh. When I was little, and I mean very little, five years
old, my great grandmother taught me to read and then got me
hooked on Trixie Belden books. The Mystery of the Red
Trailer was one of my favorites. I must have read that
around 7 yrs old. I'll never forget when Trixie, at the time
only 14 or so, made frizzled beef with a can of mushroom
soup and some peas under the guidance of Honey, her
sidekick, because Honey's governess, Miss Trask was napping.
Of course they were scolded by Miss Trask that it wasn't a
"proper" meal, but it was "acceptable".

From that time on, it's been mandatory whenever I made SOS,
I had to mix in the peas. And I don't even LIKE peas.

Ok, this is spooky. As I was reading through the posts
in the group, I thought I would post a note for the
recipe to SOS.

Bingo! Here it is. You kinda scare me, Randy!

Now I have to run to my new wallymart and buy some Carl
Budding's beef, using the self-check lane, so I can
finally make this for breakfast tomorrow. Of course, I
could have cheated and just called my mom but Usenet is so
much more fun and sometimes brings out the childhood
stories we all hold.

But, peas and I have an understanding! I do -not- eat them
and they do -not- make me puke instantly!

My father eats creamed peas on toast, but not with any kind
of meat in it. Just looking at it makes me think of
something someone regurgitated. No offense 🙂

I used to have that problem! Don't know what happened, I can
actually eat frozen and cooked peas now. But canned - no
sir.... and never any problem with raw .

Och... I use Hormel's chipped beef if I'm going to make it
from scratch. But Stouffer's makes a perfectly acceptable
boil-n-bag/microwavable SOS (IMHO).

You used Carl Budding beef? Why? That has to be the oddest
SOS ingredient I've heard of yet. Why not use dried beef?

chipped beef, made with dried beef that was soaked for a
while, served on toast.

The other is the US Army version of SOS, taught me by
my husband, consisting of crumbled and browned ground
beef, salt and pepper, flour blended in, and milk,
served on toast.

Am I off-base here? (And no peas, please!!).

Nope, you aren't off base. The original with the dried
chipped beef is a leftover recipe from WWI and WWII. Later
wars they started serving it made with ground beef. I still
prefer the dried chipped beef over hamburger. But go figure,
I prefer breakfast sausage in the white gravy over biscuits
and it's essentially the same thing 🙂
