  1. JOHN GLENN (ON THE SENATE FLOOR)
    Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2004 11:13

Some people still don't understand why military personnel do what
they do for a living. This exchange between Senators John Glenn
(D-Ohio) and Senator Howard Metzenbaum is worth reading. Not only is it
a pretty impressive impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of
one man's explanation of why men and women in the armed services do
what they do for a living.

This is a typical, though sad, example of what some, who have never
    served, think of the military:

Senator Metzenbaum (speaking to Senator Glenn): "How can you
run for Senate when you've never held a real job?"

Senator Glenn (D-Ohio): "I served 23 years in the United States
Marine Corps. I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My
plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasions."

"I was in the space program. It wasn't my checkbook, Howard; it
was my life on the line. It was not a nine-to-five job, where I
took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank."

"I ask you to go with me ... as I went the other day... to a
veteran's hospital and look those men - with their mangled bodies -
in the eye, and tell THEM they didn't hold a job! You go with me
to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the widows
and Orphans of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee.. and you look
those kids in the eye and tell them that their DADS didn't hold a job.
You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in Arlington National
Cemetery , where I have more friends buried than I'd like to remember,
and you watch those waving flags."

"You stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell ME
that those people didn't have a job? I'll tell you, Howard
Metzenbaum; you should be on your knees every day of your life
thanking God that there were some men - SOME MEN - who held
REAL jobs And they required a dedication to a purpose - and a love
of country and a dedication to duty - that was more important than
life itself. And their self-sacrifice is what made this country
    possible.

I HAVE held a job, Howard! What about you?"

For those who don't remember - During W.W.II, Howard
Metzenbaum was an attorney representing the Communist Party in the USA.
    Now he's a U.S.Senator!

If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading it in
    English thank a Veteran.

Sheldon, I think the speech took place at a debate at the Cleveland
City Club around May 3rd 1974, not on the Senate floor. Though the
contents are pretty close to what was said. The only difference I see
is Messybaum didn't come out and say Glenn never held a job. What he
did say, was "Colonel Glenn" had never "met a payroll," implying that
Glenn's background as a career military man/NASA meant he was lacking
in the real-world experience a U.S. Senator should possess.
(Metzenbaum's claim wasn't quite accurate: After his retirement from
the Marine Corps, Glenn had held a position as a business executive
with Royal Crown Cola and had served both as a member of the board of
directors and as president of Royal Crown International.)

To me that means the same thing as saying you never held a real job.

The sentiments expressed by Glenn are fine - even admirable, but this
colloquy could not have occured on the date you cite. Metzenbaum
retired from the Senate in 1995. Glenn retired from the Senate in 1999.
The Ohio Senators are Dewine and Voinovich and have been for some time.

These types of exchanges are often scripted, especially between
Senators of the same party. As you no doubt know, in regular procedure
and in the interest of decorum, Senators are not supposed to address
each other directly. They are to address their remarks to the chair.
They are required to obtain prior consent before directly addressing
another Senator. Metzenbaum was merely providing Glenn with a soapbox.
Metzenbaum's remarks were intended as an ironic scourge aimed at those
who scorn military and other public service. While hardly a favorite of
mine, Metzenbaum, a quite liberal Democrat and wealthy man, was far too
PC to be caught expressing contempt for rank and file military. He
might deride the Pentagon bureaucracy, the civilian leadership, senior
officers and so on, but not the rank and file.

I was watching CSPAN when Metzenbaum gave a speech announcing his
retirement. Among other things, he said that he would miss the
    "bottle",
umm, "battle". You know that Senators routinely ask for unanimous
consent to "revise and extend" their remarks. So, you know what got
    revised and extended.

I will revise and extend my own remarks. If this (or anything
approximating this were said), it would make more sense that it
happened during a primary campaign, which would have to have been in
the early 70's and no way in January 2004 or on the Senate floor.
    Thanks for the link.

You're welcome. Now for some *real* SOS (from allrecipes.com)

    Army SOS Creamed Ground Beef

    INGREDIENTS:
    1 pound ground beef
    1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    1 cube beef bouillon
    3/4 teaspoon salt
    1 pinch ground black pepper
    2 1/4 cups milk
    1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

    DIRECTIONS:
Brown beef in a large skillet over medium high heat. Stir in flour,
bouillon, salt and pepper. Saute all together for about 5 minutes or until
flour is absorbed. Gradually stir in milk and Worcestershire sauce. Bring
all to a simmer, stirring constantly. Cook until thickened, about 5 to 10
    minutes. Serve hot!

[Personally, I like creamed chipped beef a *lot* better! I had to critique a
meal of this dreck once, and I wrote: "this hamburger stuff is an
abomination. It tastes of beef fat and glue, and looks like something a dog
vomited up after gorging itself on week-old carrion."]

Likewise. Chipped beef easily beats ground beef. I also prefer that the
white sauce not be too thick or pasty. I like my preparation for dinner
every once in a while. Never much cared for the version we were served
    in the Army.

HooYah, hot sauce is like liquid McGyver(sp?). It can fix anything. I

It's an old plot trick, making some exotic trick device out of
whatevers available. I first remember it from an old episode of I Spy
when Bill Cosby made a bomb from some fertilizer, dry ice, and a dead

Hmmmmm. Interesting. When I was in boot camp, or the few times in the
hospital, I was never asked to critique the food. Never really wanted
to since meals were a wonderful relief, even expectation, from the
drudgery and boredom of camp and bed rest. Afterwards, in retrospect,
the stuff was horrible, of course. But so was camp and extended bed
    rest.

    The Truth
This exchange did take place but not on the floor of the Senate, but the wording
of Glenn's words if fairly accurate.
It was during the campaign debate in 1974 when Metzenbaum was running for
reelection and Glenn was challenging him.
Glenn and Metzenbaum had also run against each other for the same seat four
years earlier, a race that Metzenbaum had won.
A few days prior to the debate, Metzenbaum made a widely publicized statement
that said that Glenn had never met a payroll (he didn't actually say that he'd
    never held a real job).
In other words, Glenn had been a military man not a businessman, like
Metzenbaum, who had created a major newspaper and a nation-wide parking company.
Metzenbaum did not repeat that charge during the debate, but Glenn came prepared
to respond to it and did it so powerfully that he also went on to win the
    election.

If Howard Metzenbaum represented the Communist party as an attorney during World
War II, we have not found substantiaton for that.
