  1. Last night I made a pot of stew with a lot of Indian spices in it and within a
few minutes of eating it, my nose was completely stopped up and by this morning
I feel as if I have a cold or like I have bad pollen allergies.

I have never heard of food causing the symptoms of air-borne allergies and I
was just wondering if anyone else has.

    The ingredients were:

    pork
    carrots
    celery
    garlic
    ginger
    green cardomon
    white cardomon
    saffron
    cumin
    tumeric
    black pepper
    coriander seeds

The spices were all whole seeds that I ground in a coffee grinder.

    Thanks!

I don't think allergy is the word you are looking for. Perhaps you have a
food intolerance. AFAIK, to have an allergy, you should have a rash and
maybe some other scary symptoms. But, people do have individual
    intolerances to different foods.

Yes, there was something or combination of things in there you
    were allergic to.

You may have discovered a food allergy somewhere in that list.
I discovered fairly early on LC, on monthly off-plan meals, that
corn, popcorn, soft drinks based on corn syrup, or things with high
cornstarch content (such as pudding) made my nose block up and start
running, as well as giving me a congested feeling in the chest.

    Thanks!

I have food *intolerances*, but really don't know much about food *allergies*
and I had no idea that they could present as a sinus thing.

    Robyn,

There's another possibility. I learned from the book, "Zebras don't Get
Ulcers" that the nose can stuff up in response to changes in the
    autonomic nervous system.

This explains why when I am just about ready to go to sleep, my nose has
always stuffed up. I thought for years it was allergies and bought
special pillows, air filters etc, none of which worked. But that book
explained that the relaxation response paradoxically could release
substances that caused the nose to stuff up.

So perhaps one of those spices triggered something similar. They can
also trigger flushing which is a related response.

No, food allergies can manifest as nasal congestion, post nasal drip, etc.
Whether or not that is what the OP has is a matter for an allergist (and
even they don't always seem to agree), but it is certainly possible.

If you're like me, it might have just been the combination of the
spices. Those do me every time, and I get stopped up, but it clears
quickly. I have what's known as "chronic vaso-motor rhinitis," which in
essence means "runny nose when your body gets irritated for any reason,"
and spices do that. I think it's worth it.

Thanks. That sounds a lot like what happened, I got all stuffed up REALLY fast
and it went away within 24 hours.
