Thanks to all who posted in reply to my question. I have followed (some) of the advice and to date all seems well.
I have:- dug up the body of Joe McCarthy to help cure me of my obvious communism and try to use miles not Km now. Spoken to the local farm vet re possible castration bought a jock strap tight lycra shorts (does my bum look big in this?) adjusted saddle and replaces the steam with a shorter one to improve riding position.
The latter two seem to be of most help, funny that.

Also, if you want to fine-tune your position, using a 2.5" riser stem will allow you to rotate the stem fore/aft to change reach without buying new stems. -- PeteCresswell

yeah, I was trying to picture a 2 1/2" riser stem positioned backwards...sure I guess that's one of two available positions, but it would be pretty funky!
