  1. I've recently started running (around 4-5 km per day, plus one run 8-10
km per week). Yesterday entered a team charity walk event over 18
hours, walking round a track half hour on two hours off.

I ended up with really sore upper arms and elbows and sometimes this
happens after a run too, anyone else had this sort of soreness and any
    idea of cause and solution.

Simple muscle tension will give me a little of this on longer runs - I
try to regularly check my posture and consciously relax and shake out
my shoulders and arms from time to time. The arm soreness has only
gotten out of hand once for me, during a cold and windy marathon for
which I was way underdressed and found myself tensed up against the
cold most of the morning. That really sucked: felt like I had left my
tendons out overnight in the rain and they shrank two sizes.

I've had sore shoulder(s), upper arm and/or neck after 24 hour events, and
during 5hr+ runs as well. I don't think there's much you can do to train
your arms/neck for that kind of endurance. After doing a number of such
events it seems to get less extreme.

  6. How come?

  7. You use your arms to run. I tell my athletes that they need to lift
upper body because without strength in your arms you can't run any
faster. Your legs will only go as fast as your arms. I know my
runners that do not have a lot of upper body strength get sore
sholders, biceps, chest. Lift the pain will go away. And stretch.
