Pulled a bit of overtime today which was not a chore, the other guy on
is the guy who's pulled me in to ATB. He had much more to do than I did
so I left him to it.
So he has a bit of a break and we chew fat a bit about the upcoming
ATB. He's got a Bad Boy (which I really like) and he took me through
things like his disc brakes which are a bit of a mystery to me etc.
Then we got to looking at my bike. ``Gee, it really is a commuter isn't
it?'' he says. Lets see, NiteFlux, rack, frame pump; yup.
He looks a bit closer. ``Mate, your rims are shot.''
Now I've heard about rims going but it's not something I've experienced
to date. Pictures were painted for me of rim exploding while going
downhill at 70+km/h. I didn't need much persuading to visit BSC tout
suite.
Talked to Sean(spelling?) and he put it too me that with 40,000kms
behind them I'd be better off getting new wheels rather than new rims
for the old hubs. After pointing out that I normally have around about
15kgs of luggage on the racks (only when I'm on call thank goodness, one
week in three) and he steered me towards a set of Ritchley Aero OCR
rims built on to Dice hubs with DT spokes. Five twenty knocked down to
four forty. Eek! Oh well, it is my transport.
Went down the road for caffeine and cake while waiting; friendly barista
so chatted to him a bit and mentioned I'm doing ATB. Turns out he lives
in Geelong. Two hundred and forty five a week in fuel! Fsck, that put
things in perspective!
Picked up bike a little grumpy about having spent money (I am Scottish.)
Grumpiness lasted till halfway down Hotham Street. These new wheels are
NICE! Very NICE! They seem to handle bumps in the road better, they're
smooth as silk and I do believe they actually go faster! Maybe it's a
tailwind, so I turned round and did five ks in the other direction.
Nope, definately faster!
I rode home grinning from ear to ear, I even went ``Wheeeeeeeeee!'' on
occaision which drew some odd looks from pedestrians waiting to cross
the road.
What next to replace I wonder (oh no, more money! But it feels so
Good!)
