This afternoon, for some entirely unknown reason, AOL "lost" (for want of a better word) all of
the newsgroups I subscribe to.

So, after speaking with the online help... ChatAgents... I realise finally that you pay peanuts,
you get monkeys. AOL Online help people have less knowledge than that in the brain of a retarded
flea :-( I even have to explain how to locate newsgroups within AOL to one of them, as I am told
they can't do it. 'nuff sed :-(

Eventually I have given up trying to find out what went wrong and have simply had to resubscribe
to all my newsgroups again - re-do my sig file, re-set the spam filter... Oh, and all the
kill-file settings were lost too :-(

I am in a *baaaaad* mood!

Helen I have big struggles with NTL over newsgroup services but this makes them seem quite good!
Its amazing how few isp 'techies' know about newsgroups. They seem to think that the web is the
beginning & end of the internet. Ooh i hate to think about losing my killfile. Good to have you
back around

I gave up on NTL and moved to news.individual.net, which is a free service in Germany. Its fast
enough for real-time use as opposed to using a local newscache program like Leafnode. Take a look at
individual.netindividual.netOpen ↗

As an aside - how do people manage to get published on BBC News talkback? I've not achieved it yet -
the latest attempt being on the GM debate. I contradicted the argument that it would reduce the use
of pesticides, with the best known crop I know being "Roundup Ready", Roundup being a pesticide sold
by the GM company to be used in high dose with it. I also mentioned the concept of gene piracy -
perhaps an unpopular oppinion.

I had that off demon not long ago - their homepages upload server wouldn't talk to me (apparently no
route to it). I phone technical support. We talk for a while, and I'm already suspecting I've got a

I'm on there as I write, but not on that subject. I think the key is to get in early, as soon as the
topic appears. If someone else has made a similar point, they won't take your contribution even if
it's better.

Install another newsreader of your choice and sign up to 'The Berlin Server'

I gave up some time ago and got my own domain hosted by a company that knew what it was doing. Added
on the Berlin free news server for newsgroups and sorted.

Damn, Stan, you beat me to it.

FWIW, you could try using text.news.ntlworld.com As this suggests one is able to receive text-based
NGs only, so no binaries. However, since I changed to text.news.ntlworld.com some time ago I have
had no problem with either sending or receiving NG posts.

Also, Stan, FWIW, if you do phone NTL, try to speak to a proper techie rather than to a phone
answerer. The proper techies do know what they're talking about. Sadly, the phone answerers are
quite reluctant to put one through to the experts. However, a trawl through the ntl.* NGs is worth
the effort as there are several non-NTL people thereabouts that use NTL as their ISP who do know
what they're on about.
