who are passionate about politics, sports, hobbies of various sorts.
There are bloggers who simply post about their lives; instead of
emailing pictures of their kids to all their relatives, they post the
pictures on their blogs. One could as easily say that
alt.support.diet.low-carb is the province of scammers, on the basis of
the drive-by posts about "miracle" diet products. And one would be just
as wrong.

Why all of the blogspot spams all of a sudden? Do these people get money
every time somebody clicks on their blog? Is that it?

I see. As a representative of these bloggers, can you tell us why you and
the others are flooding the newsgroup with all sorts of "come read my blog!"
posts? What's the monetary benefit to you? If you have a benign blog on
blogspot, how about putting a "No click referral" policy up front on your
blog posts?

I am not one of "these bloggers". My blog is about my daily life, and I
don't even mention it here. If you don't believe me, you're free to have
a look: http://alice_q.livejournal.com . I read dozens of blogs daily,
about hockey, knitting, my friends' lives (one friend is using his blog
to provide updates about the condition of his brother who is in critical
condition following an auto accident), and many other topics. A few of
these bloggers have click-through links to Amazon (all of them are
totally upfront about this, as it costs money to host a popular blog);
some also have web-shops where they sell hand-spun fiber; none of them
spam newsgroups. For many folks, discussion on blog comment-threads has
replaced usenet for interaction with likeminded people.

These blogging spammers are the same folks who, in past years, would
spam links to their Geocities home pages, and the like. Now they have a
new trick in their arsenal. And the way you deal with them is the same
way you dealt with Geocities scammers: you complain to the web host.
It's real simple.

I'm not trying to defend spammers and scammers. But their use of blogs
as a "marketing" tool is just that. And it doesn't mean that *all*
bloggers are scammers.

Well, those are the only kind we ever hear about...the ones who are
desperate to get us to click on their blogsite. The ones who are "passionate
about politics, sports" or hobbies don't come on a newsgroup and write "You
have Got to check this out!"

As far as bloggers who "simply post about their lives", that strikes me as
being narciscistic. and creepy.

In some cases, yes. They may have google ads or some other feature
that pays them a pittance per click or view.

I'd expect someone's blog (or whatever web page they link to) to have
the same level of quality as their posts that link to it. If their
posts have no interesting content other than "read my blog!", their
blogs probably won't have much to say either. If their posts are
interesting, their blogs might be too.

I've got a blog <http://aaron.baugher.biz/blog/>, but I don't write in
it nearly as much as I do on Usenet and other forums, because I stink
at starting with a blank page and creating an essay from scratch. I'm
much more prolific when replying to something that gives me a starting
point.
