cities across America regularly subsidize stadia for baseball and
football franchises to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. The
civic-esteem challenged municipality of Houston built a $500million
football complex *before* they had a franchise (and they almost didn't
get it).

SF never belonged to Cuba or China. You'll have to give it
back to the Russians. I'm not sure they'll take it.

Also, SF just allowed a big cyclocross race to take place in a major
municipal park (and this GG Park race even had a legal permit!)

If subsidizing pill popping fattie athletes that can't even get warmed
up in the bullpen after two hours of mind-numbing baseball
without gobbling a handful of greenies is a crime, every major
metro area in the US is guilty.

That said, a city that wants a bike race can make it happen, and a
city that doesn't want a bike race can make it not happen, by rules,
permits, liability, fees, cops, cop fees, you name it. Anyone (anyone
named Laff) who gloats over the demise of SFGP because Tommy Weasel
is a stingy winger as well as the USCF's own man on the grassy knoll
should keep in mind that losing a race is bad for all the races.
If lots of cities had races, it would be easier to start up races.
Just like with baseball teams. Cities want baseball teams and pay
for the stupid stadiums because they're popular but also because
having a team is a status symbol, it shows you're a "major" city.
