Held the Tufts Criterium this past saturday, so I got to try out the new camera. Was playing around with it some, so some shots came out decent, some came out... not so much so. Still experimenting!
I know I should have used a flash, but there were more than enough crashes with me distracting racers in corners with a blinding flash. I personally witnessed at least 10 crashes, and we sent 2 kids to the hospital. We had 5 major crashes in the first race of the day, USCF3/4/5!!!! Unfortunately I couldn't take crash pictures because I was marshalling, so I had to run over and direct racers around, check the downed riders, etc. etc. etc.
My personal fave is the USCF rider (ECV jersey, 2nd picture IIRC) - he was going at least 20mph around this curve, I just got really damn lucky on the timing!

nice and clear Jon.. tell me about your camera settings. I am having real trouble getting my focusing dialed in on my Canon, and I"m pretty sure it's me and not the camera.

I knew I got good acceleration out of a corner when I'd stand up and my inside pedal would scrape two or three times as I drove out. Whee! Nice pics Jon.

SO many pedals scrape hard on this course. Its the worst sound to hear, too - because 98% of the time its nothing, but some of the really nasty crashes start with that sound.
He was actually fine, that corner if you're good you can actually pedal all the way through with minimal scraping. Thats the second corner of a chicane, after a slight uphill between the two. The gap opened up because that guy was a beast. I think he ended up winning. My teammate Abe is the guy right behind him.

I got lazy most of the day and just used the "sports mode". I think this might do continual autofocusing. It also seemed to keep the f-stop pretty low, which (should) keep the depth of field pretty short. I put it on high-speed continuous mode, (about 4fps I think), then just followed the riders with my eye on the viewfinder and tried to keep them in frame. They went by so fast I mostly just turned at what I thought would be the right speed.... and occasionally got lucky. I definitely got a bunch of "Oh look, there's half a wheel!" shots.
I played around with prefocussing sometimes too - focussed just about where I thought their front wheel would be on the ground, then pulled the camera up from that spot and shot. Trick is guessing how far away the subject is going to be! I think thats how I took the ECV one. It also helps you take photos exactly when you want to - the Canon S50 has like a .01 second lag time if its prefocussed, so it's almost instant.

and then you have to account for shutter lag! I've found my continuous is somewhat slow ( 2.2). I have to remember that at NORBA last year I took a [censored] load of pics, and did get some good ones. So I'll keep messing with it.

Here in Florida, we don't need no stinking full-length tights and armwarmers, even in February!
Umm, I'd say that more than half of the riders have arm warmers or long sleeves; maybe 20% knee or leg warmers.

In all seriousness, the morning race was cold, then the blazing sun came out and it went from absolute zero to the surface of the sun in like a femtosecond. Well actually, I just forgot to look at the pictures before posting.
