Yep, after seeing him and listening to him for 30 seconds. That was one
pathetic bit of commercialism.

I'm not sure why they chose him, I'm not aware of any connection to
cycling. He was a professional skateboarder before acting however.

Heras I expected better of, since he had ridden three years with USPS
in the Tours. With limited HC climbs, though, it didn't really play
well to his traditional strengths. Too long in the flat stages for
both these guys. ASO tried to defeat the favorite and handicapped the
field.

You know, I figured him for a quiter after the doping and his
not-so-successful return, but the guy's comments make me think that there is
even more to Jan than I gave him credit for.

Lance is a winner on the bike but Jan certainly can't be looked down on
since there are very very few poeple that can match him. If he hangs in
there he might still win again.

Well, Lance should at least shoot for the double: Giro and Tour. That's
been done, and by multiple people, so Lance should be able to do it. And
then he should tackle the Vuelta right afterwards 😉. Or, he could

I wonder how long he's got left in his legs. True, he's the same age
(32) as the other 5-time winners who sought a 6th (unsuccessfully in
their cases). But looking at the record books, I note that Anquetil and
Hinault both had 7 years between their 1rst and their final wins. If
that holds, he could have his final Tour win in 2006.

I sure I hope so, because he deserves it, IMHO. But as somebody wrote
here awhile back, his window is closing. I'm afraid that if I *had* to
bet, I would bet that he won't.

You wonder why and how he gets into so many bad crashes: two in a row.
His team is supposed to protect him. But maybe he charges ahead in
situations where Lance might hang back a little, I don't know.

Also, the thing about his dog - he's just too tender-hearted. Can you
imagine that affecting Lance in the same way? Lance is just a
completely different personality. I think there's a certain coldness
about Lance, a coldness that he's able to harness to his advantage in
competition. He's just more single-minded than others.

I got sick of it the first time I heard it, but when Jason Lee gets
obnoxious, lots of Gen-Xers get excited. It probably was a very effective
way to hype the Tour to an audience that is not well aware of the specifics
of the event that make it the grandest of all grand tours.

He is a great rider that had his worse ever performance. That was the
situation Armstrong was in last year. Maybe Ullrich will do better next year
and maybe not. Maybe he will find success in other events since that is what
he normally does although everyone has to face declining performance at one
point. I am not sure his 4th place with 2 excellent ITT performances was
anything to be ashamed of. The first 2 days in the mountains buried him. He
said he was sick. It happens.

Whoever touted them as favorites did not carefully examine the course this
year. Although it has been done before (a climber taking out a winning
margin in one big effort when there are relatively few climbing days) it is
pretty damn rare. Besides, the teams have a responsibility to tout
themselves as having contenders to get attention for their sponsor. Too bad
when others can't really tell the difference. I guarantee you that Heras
would have been thrilled with a stage win and or a podium spot or climber's
jersey. The same goes for Mayo.

On production quality, well done. On message, eh... But I'm already
a cycling fan, and rabid at that, so hard for me to give any real
objective appraisal as a neophyte.

When I'd nip down to the pub to catch the stages replays in the
evening, I'd find myself surrounded by people asking questions about
how the race works, what a long ride is like, who these other guys
are, why there are so many of them, etc. I rather enjoyed explaining
it all, until I was practically foaming at the mouth. I just hope my
passion for the sport rubbed off on at least a few.

There were non believers the Cyclism commercials did nothing for, as
they insisted that the pub was better put to use, letting them
watching soccer or baseball. I used to be a baseball fan, so I do
know it's possible to be saved.
