For me Italy is the soul of cycling, and it's dying. Maybe a racer like
Schumacher will appear, racing for an Italian cycling team and revive the sport
the way Schumi has brought Ferrari back, but I'm afraid that the sport is
dying.
The GT's have always been almost mythical. The legends connected with the
common people, and their work ethic and craftsmanship. They could relate. Now
the disconnect is drugs, and they always suspect every performance.

I'm probably gonna zip over the hill in the afternoon to catch that
Cat's Hill race in Los Gatos. There's a 23% grade and looks like some
decent teams are lining up for it.

Heroes and stories are what make the sports world go round. Just take all that
has been written about "The Look", on tape it's not much in the fans minds it's
a huge event and will continue to grow with retelling. You can break the Jan vs
Lance battle down to a few critical spots, and a bunch of numbers, but that's
not what a lot of people are watching for, especially non racers. They are
watching a great story, with many chapters and twists unfold. The actual facts
of the race are only a small part of the story.
When the main part of the story becomes "How're they cheating?" this breaks
the bond between the people who could conceive and dream of doing these things,
and the drug driven reality.
I think that the response to the disconnect is that now people are doping in
citizen races. They want to be in touch with the dream.
If you think that the dream is not at least as important for continued public
support as the reality I say that your mistaken.
The sportswriters talk of an event "capturing the imagination" and that is the
connecttion.

bad for a race nobody cares about but me. I guess they heard I wanted to
watch so they decided not to disappoint me.
