Phil and Paul have said several times that it is customery to reward the
domestiques by giving them all of the prize money. The winner more than
makes up this amount in all of the various ways.

As mentioned above, the prize money is split between the team. Lance
actually won't get any of it as it's a tradition for the winner to give the
winnings to those that supported him. Lance supposedly also doubles the
amount so the team will actually get twice the half-million Euros.

Lance gets his bucks via the endorsments he does as the winner of the tour.
The prize money, to him, is not that important (exept that it's a way to
reward his team). Finally, I've also heard that he gets a VERY large bonus
for winning the Tour that more than makes up for whatever prize money he
doesn't claim (or contributes).

I think Roll wrote words to the effect that he was the only team leader not
to do so. IIRC, it was not clear from context if he meant American team
leader, or, a team leader of any nationality.

I remember somebody stating that they have Roll's book. If so they could
verify. I read a library copy of the earlier book.
