  1. Hi,

I'm planning on walking up Snowdon next week with my 7 year old daughter.

    I can either do:

    1. Route from Llanberis, up the path which pretty much follows the railway
    line
    2. Miners Track from Pen-y-Pass

I've been up both myself - the first seems very long and gradual, while the
other seems a bit shorter, and steeper.

I know everyone is different, and what would suit one child might not suit
another. But I wanted to check here to see what experience others might have
had with doing this walk with kids.

    Thanks

    Jim

I did the miners track (or was it the PYG) many many years ago
en-famille when I was no'but a youngun and my little bro but a nipper.

I reckon the Miners/PYG is far far more interesting than the slow slog
up from Llanberis. For one thing there are lakes to look at and paddle
in and you don't have the train chugging up alongside you. The other
thing is it starts higher up. Get the sherpa bus from Llanberis as the
carpark at Pen y Pass is often full unless you get there very early.

  3. Thanks Phil - I think you've made up my mind for me....

I'd agree with all of Phil's points. Trying to keep a little-un
interested all the way up the Llanberis would be a challenge in itself!

Some years ago I was walking back down the Miner's Track and passed a
man with a boy of about 7. They had stopped for a rest and were just
    getting up again.

Dad: "Not far to go now."
Son: "Best foot forward, is it, Dad?"
    Dad: "Yes, that's right."
    [Pause]
Son: "Which one is my best foot, Dad?"

(The boy seemed to coping fine, by the way.)

you could do the snowdon ranger track.not as rough and narrow like the
upper part of the pyg track.zig zags up some feilds then a walk along
level ground and the zig zags to join the upper reaches of the
llanberis path about 10 minutes from the top

That term does sort of suggest a minimum of 3 feet

If you can do it today, you didn't put off enough yesterday.

My son, when he was 9, enjoyed going up via PYG and back via Miners.

In fact that was before they improved it!! From Glaslyn I understand
    it has been paved?

My son who was 6 at the time and seriously in to trains chased it all the
way to the top. We had trouble keeping up with him. That was the best route
for us. He wasn't in to views or water.

I took my children up Snowdon several times when they were younger
(the youngest was 4 the first time IIRC), and used the Pyg track on
the way up and the Miners track on the way down. I always felt that
the Llanberis path was too long to keep them interested, and involved
too much ascent for little legs. I kept the lakes (and mine shafts)
for the descents as I might not have got them any further if we had
passed them on the way up!. Plus the mystery of being able to hear the
dragons (aka trains), but not see them until nearly the top acted as a
powerful incentive (not to mention the prospect of an ice cream at the
    cafe).
